BBC Scotland has given their endorsement to a story claiming that Jose Mourinho is in the running to manage Celtic.
There are a million and one reasons why that story won’t be happening but that won’t stop the BBC from highlighting a story in Sports Boom.
Snooker expert Shane McDermott is the brains behind the story which may or not have been written for the purposes of Search Engine Optimisation.
Mourinho, Celtic, Ange Postecoglou and Martin O’Neill feature in the opening 100 words to draw in traffic.
BBC Scotland have bought into it, highlighting a story that everyone at the state broadcaster knows won’t be happening.
MOURINHO AND NICHOLSON- NOT A CHANCE
After 20 years operating at elite level the current Benfica boss isn’t likely to put his reputation in the hands of Michael Nicholson.
From Wilfried Nancy to Mourinho? Really?
Nancy was the number one candidate for Nicholson in January. Clearly TheSpecial One isn’t rated by the Celtic CEO.
‘Mourinho being considered as next permanent Celtic boss’ – gossip https://t.co/NgnR7gsJaV
— BBC Scotland News (@BBCScotlandNews) February 10, 2026
Celtic sacked Nancy on January 5 with no comment or signs that they are looking for a permanent replacement.
Nicholson hasn’t been heard of since welcoming O’Neill back for the second time this season to bail out his horrific decision making.
Clearly no credible manager will go near the Celtic job while Nicholson has any role. That’s why Nancy got the job. That’s why he lasted 33 days.
Switching from Rodgers to Nancy says everything about the current Celtic decision making processes. Everyone inside football knows a club completely out of touch.
Stories of his negotiating tactics are legendary in football circles with clubs and agents giving him a wide berth.
Celtic’s first team squad currently has six loan signings and three players out of contract at the end of the season.
That either gives the next manager a blank canvas to work with or a near impossible rebuild job.
In order to draw Celtic into the modern era an experienced Director of Football is required. One with autonomy, a workable budget and defined targets.
Until that happens a phone call to Brendan Rodgers and a read at the Dermot Desmond statement of October 27 will scare off Mourinho and others.

His narcissistic, arrogant personality does not fit young men of today. You can’t tear strips of players and tell the squad they are not meeting his expectations, when when the team won. Older players take no notice of him. A journalist called Jose spikey. I doubt Dermie and the Club would take Mourinho on? I know you are rightfully mocking the BBC beat-up.
Editor: Mourinho would collapse in fits of laughter of he picked up the phone and heard the timid words ‘Hi, it’s Mikey fae Selik, any chance big man….’
Joe if the Celtic board had their way and could get away with it they’d have MO’N there till he’s in a nursing home, don’t hold much hope of these people getting us an elite manager especially after Fancy Nancy
Yes, it does raise the question: is the Board / DD actually currently looking for a new manager?
Chairman Wilson was – apparently – too busy in January, not buying players – so not looking for a manager then?
Have they just parked the search until the end of the season…?
IF there is any hope for a proper attempt at a squad rebuild this summer,
then a permanent manager has to be confirmed by season end at the latest.
But, we all know how this will probably go:
IF MON or Maloney are not made manager,
then the Board will probably still be searching weeks into the transfer window!
Supposedly the talk here in Portugal in some of the sports newspapers, is that Martinez will leave the national team after the world cup, Mourinho will likewise leave Benfica and replace him … whether that means that Martinez will come to us an play with his mate Shaun, which could be a reason why Shaun is heavily involved in the new players, as he is preparing the ground for Martinez? Probably shite but its something that I have heard in the past few days, both here and online.
Editor: Once Martinez, or any credible manager, speaks to his agent about Celtic’s structure and recruitment policy interest ends. That’s why Nancy was Nicholson’s number one candidate.
