Celtic’s plan to sign Mika Baur appears to have stalled over 300,000 euros.
On Monday Fabrizio Romano broke the first news of a potential transfer from SC Paderborn to Celtic.
Unusually it was reported that Celtic had agreed terns with the player with a fee to be negotiated with his club.
While players can be sounded out generally the rule is that a deal is firstly agreed with a club before they are given permission to approach the player.
Two months on from winning the Scottish Cup Celtic have only added Camilo Duran to their squad.
Kasper Schmeichel, Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi won’t be available for a couple of reasons.
Celtic fans have grown increasingly concerned about the failure to recruit. Tonight’s news from Germany adds to those concerns.

Sky Germany reports that negotiations between Celtic and SC Paderborn over attacking midfielder Mika Baur have temporarily stalled. The newly promoted Bundesliga club remain unwilling to lower their €5m asking price. Paderborn are reportedly even prepared to retain Baur for their top-flight campaign and risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.
Celtic nevertheless remain optimistic. The Scottish champions are reportedly prepared to offer approximately £4m, equivalent to around €4.7m. The relatively small gap between the two clubs suggests that an agreement remains possible.
As noted in a recent Get German Football News piece, Baur has already agreed personal terms and prefers a move to the Bhoys. The 22-year-old contributed four goals and seven assists during Paderborn’s promotion campaign.
A €5m sale would also establish a new Paderborn transfer record. With Filip Bilbija, Calvin Brackelmann and Dennis Seimen all departing without generating fees, the SCP have a clear financial incentive to complete the deal.
While there is still every chance that the transfer could be completed it isn’t a good luck for Celtic.
CELTIC STRUGGLE TO COMPLETE TRANSFER DEALS
Last summer a number of clubs commented on the difficulties that they had negotiating with the Scottish champions.
A difference of 300,000 euros should be fairly easy to overcome. Add on’s or a sell on clause should be able to cover it.
While Celtic stall other clubs have been alerted to the availability of Baur and the fee required to complete a deal.
On Saturday Celtic complete their pre-season fixtures against AC Milan with Duran the only addition to the squad.
With the SPFL Premiership starting on August 3 and the Champions League a fortnight later time is starting to slip away.
Martin O’Neill is expected to give a media conference on Friday to preview the match against AC Milan. Transfer issues are likely to dominate the questions.
Daizen Maeda is believed to be undergoing a medical on Friday ahead of joining Ipswich Town.

He is absolutely horrendous at his job, but will convince himself he is doing a great job. The team are going through a huge rebuild and we have bought 1 player with 4 first team regulars out to pastures new, and key players in our team focused on moves elsewhere. Penny pinching Nicholson doesn’t realize the damage he is doing. This is NOT the way to prepare for a crucial CL play off tie worth 10’s of millions to the club. He thinks he is saving us money by penny pinching but in reality is costing us millions!
I’m growing increasingly frustrated and hopeless regarding the functioning of the Celtic Football Club. I’ve been a follower for around 20 years. Just reading these transfer ‘dealings’ from Nicholson and co makes me feel to throw up. Anger, anxiety and frustration have turned into total resignation. I know we need to have the club suffer total collapse so that a proper change can be made. If the last season didn’t give these morons any motivation to change, only total calamity may do it.
Typical Celtic penny pinching give them the £250,000 & get deal done. Why do no other clubs have the problem our board has when it comes to signing players. It’s getting beyond a joke now.
