Celtic’s u-20 side edged a step closer to 5-in-a-row without kicking a ball last night.
With a handful of games left to play a hat-trick from Denny Johnstone against Motherwell on Monday turned the spotlight onto Hibs and Sevco who are trying to wrestle the title away from the young hoops.
Both sides were in action last night drawing from winning positions setting the scene perfectly for tomorrow’s Celtic v Hibs match at Cappielow tomorrow night, kick-off 7pm.
Going into that match Celtic and Hibs are locked on 54 points, with the Edinburgh side having played two matches more, while Sevco wait in third place four points behind having played the same number of games as the champions.
Celtic have matches left to play knowing that if they win all of them they will retain the title that has almost become their personal property since Matty Hughes lifted the 09/10 title in a side that included James Forrest, James Keatings and Greig Spence.
This season’s effort has very much been made on a game by game basis with overage players such as Beram Kayal and Derk Boerrigter dropping down for some match experience.
At the other end of the scale Darnell Fisher and Liam Henderson have stepped up into the first team with distinction while Eoghan O’Connell made an assured debut at home to Ross County.
Monday’s win against Motherwll was an important marker for the remaining fixtures breaking a run of loss, win, loss, win.
One of those defeats came away to Hibs last month at Livingston with tomorrow’s match giving the side the chance to avenge that result and deal a severe blow to Hibs hopes of winning the title.
Next week Celtic are away to Hearts with the remaining games at home to Falkirk, away to St Mirren before facing Sevco at home on May 6 and completing the campaign away to Dundee United on May 8.
