After the excitement and thrills of Celtic Park last week Gary Lineker witnessed an evening of fear and dread as Celtic limped into the group phase of the Champions League.

The BT Sport presenter sat watching alongside Gordon Strachan, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson as Celtic hung on to take their place among the elite of the game.

Brendan Rodgers team was barely recognisable from last week’s swashbuckling outfit with Lineker sharing the pain and relief of the three Celts that he was sharing a studio with.

BT Sport will be showing all six of Celtic’s group matches with the broadcaster assured of more drama that they’ll get tonight when Manchester City host Steau Bucharest holding a 5-0 first leg lead.

The arrival of Brendan Rodgers has raised Celtic’s profile to English audiences with Champions League night’s in Glasgow always delivering a special type of magic.

Speaking after qualifying Rodgers said: “It was an amazing effort from the players on the back of everything they have been through before. So huge applause to them and I’m delighted they got their reward.

I’m immensely proud. So proud for the football club, initially for Dermot, Peter and the board. They stuck their neck out in the summer and the club has a really positive feel to it. “This is a huge step forward for us. I’m absolutely delighted for the players, the mentality and honesty they showed got its rewards.

I’m delighted for my coaching staff who had to work really hard, with not too many days off, to improve the team in a short space of time.”
