John Hughes has turned down the chance to manage St Mirren.

The Paisley club parted company with Alex Rae three weeks ago and have put youth coach Alan McManus in temporary control.

Over the last two years Tommy Craig, Gary Teale, Ian Murray and Rae have all failed to halt the decline of the club who currently sit at the bottom of The Championship.

Despite lifting the Scottish Cup in 2015 Hughes quit Inverness Caley Thistle in May of this year and is keen to get back into management.

Speaking to the Daily Record his agent Raymond Sparkes said: “I can confirm St Mirren did approach John and talk to him about the vacant managerial position.

Hughes has had spells managing Falkirk, Hibs, Livingston and Hartlepool as well as Inverness Caley Thistle.

Speaking in August he admitted: “I’ve been in the game for 14 years, I’ve had great success, taken two clubs into Europe, produced players but you need to trust me that I know what I’m doing and I just felt that trust wasn’t there.

“Kenny Cameron (ICT chief executive) is not a bad lad. It got a bit sour towards the end, but I’ve texted him since and we’ve been in touch. I’m 100% convinced he does what he thinks is the best for Inverness.

“I felt I knew how to take the club forward, and I just felt my ideas weren’t getting taken on board. It was nothing to do with the budget. I’ve never been a chequebook manager.”
