Is this the treble winning XI?

|

As he settles into his hotel in Dubai Brendan Rodgers will be looking forward rather than back.

Less than a week after winning at Ibrox the Irishman will be looking through his squad highlighting areas of weakness and where he can strengthen his side for the challenges ahead.

He’s unlikely to indulge in talk of the treble or next season’s Champions League campaign but without doubt it’s in Europe that he’ll judge himself and his squad.

After 19 wins and 1 draw in the SPFL complacency is the only enemy on the home front with no sign of that creeping in with the attitude that he has brought to the club.

Change is inevitable in football as most of Neil Lennon’s favourites have discovered, new heroes are uncovered season by season with Rodgers having a very clear vision of where he wants to take Celtic.

By the close of the summer transfer window we’ll be very close to discovering who is in the Rodgers XI, for now supporters can look forward to more entertaining football and the realistic aim of capturing the elusive domestic treble.

CRAIG GORDON

After an early season wobble and a spell on the bench watching Dorus de Vries the 34-year-old has re-established himself as first choice keeper.

With a fairly settled back four the essential understanding needed between goalkeeper and defence seems to be present although there is occasional concern when Gordon races out of his penalty box.

There has been a marked improvement in his play since the season started with talks underway about an extended contract.

MIKAEL LUSTIG

Seems to have overcome the fitness problems that dogged him during Ronny Deila’s tenure and has proved himself to Rodgers.

The arrival of Cristian Gamboa has certainly provided competition but with his experience and ability to move in to central defence Lustig has an edge.

His overlapping days seem to have ended but with James Forrest ahead of him there is less requirement to go charging forward

JOZO SIMUNOVIC

Slowly but surely the Croat has proved worthy of his price tag although fitness remains a concern.

Hopefully a spell in the Dubai sunshine can have an impact and allow the 22-year-old to play in every match after the winter break.

Central defence is all about partnerships, game by game he seems more in tune with Erik Sviatchenko with that understanding spreading across the entire defence.

ERIK SVIATCHENKO

Has quickly endeared himself to the manager with his willingness to learn and became the first pick in the centre of defence.

Erik has shown his adaptability by being able to switch between partnering Jozo Simunovic and Mikael Lustig.

He struggled a bit during the punishing January schedule but after a quick winter breather he should quickly be back to his best.

KIERAN TIERNEY

Despite suffering a two month absence through injury the teenager is again likely to a leading contender in the Player of the Year awards.

A change of manager could have derailed his progress but Rodgers is clearly a big fan and enjoys developing young talent.

His understanding with Scot Sinclair shows loads of promise which is bound to increase with both back to full fitness after injury

SCOTT BROWN

The skipper has been simply outstanding.

After being linked so closely to Neil Lennon and Ronny Deila he seems to have built an even stronger bond with his new gaffer.

Every aspect of his game has improved this term, from passing, tackling and anticipation.

He’s an old fashioned skipper in every way taking the armband and responsibility with it very seriously.

STUART ARMSTRONG

What a storming finish to the year he had- in comparison to the way that he limped into 2016.

Now getting a chance in his preferred central midfield role he is being talked about as a future captain and seems a cert to get a Scotland call up.

At times in the Champions League he seemed a bit short but the experience will have did him the world of good as he looks forward to next season’s challenges.

JAMES FORREST

Probably the biggest shock and surprise of the Rodgers era.

During the summer no one would have bothered if he had been sold to an English Championship side for £200,000.

When Patrick Roberts got injured at home to Astana Forrest stepped in and earned himself a new contract with his displays. Injury free and highly effective.

TOM ROGIC

The goal-scoring Aussie has found his true position as an advanced midfielder, linking up play and putting chances away.

His goals tend to be of the spectacular variety with a well trained eye for when there is a chance at goal.

Hopefully he’s able to last the full 90 minutes in the second part of the season, his 90 minutes at Fir Park in November was invaluable.

SCOTT SINCLAIR

What a signing, he started off with a match-winning goal at Tynecastle on the opening day of the season then signed off with another winner at Ibrox to close the door on 2016.

In-between times the consistency of his play and scoring rate was hard to better.

In the Champions League he got close to top form without getting the rewards his play merited- next season he’ll be back for more

MOUSSA DEMBELE

Now deservedly being bracketed alongside Henrik Larsson and Lubo Moravcik as the best signings possible under £1m.

Since tucking away a priceless penalty against Astana he hasn’t looked back with 19 goals in all competitions.

Three strikes in the Champions League introduced the young Frenchman to the continent, three goals in derby matches made him a hero with much more to follow.
