Celtic prepare for Hong Kong trophy defence

|

Celtic have been drawn against Birmingham City, Happy Valley and HongHong Kong 7’s trophy that was won last year.

The 16 team tournament also features Ajax, West Ham, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Rangers with the three group matches being played on Saturday May 15.

A goal from Paul McGowan against Rangers clinched the trophy for Celtic last year with coach Danny McGrain looking forward to defending the trophy.

He said: “We’re delighted to be returning to Hong Kong as holders, it’s very important for us to return and retain the trophy.

“The tournament is very well organised and has good facilities. It’s an important tournament for us and has in the past produced good football.

“The short games suit the humid atmosphere, ball control is very important as you don’t want to be chasing the game in the kind of heat we will be playing in.

“Hong Kong is a fascinating place to visit and it will be good for the young players to see other cultures.”

The Celtic squad has still to be announced but Aston Villa will include striker Nathan Delfouneso who has broken into Martin O’Neill’s side this season.
