Chief Executive stress

|

Welcome to the SFA Stewart Regan.

In most businesses, and the SFA is a business, the Chief Executive carries some clout and decision making authority.

Generally a Chief Executive will be answerable to the board of directors that appointed him and ultimately the shareholders which in the case of the SFA is the clubs at every level of the Scottish game.

Regan made an impressive start in the job by demanding a meeting of the officials involved after the Dundee United-Celtic match and Hugh Dallas’ media campaign.

As the head of refereeing promoted himself and defended Dougie McDonald assistant referee Steven Craven handed in his resignation which triggered alarm bells for Regan that all wasn’t well.

Regan impressed again after Monday’s investigation by announcing that his report would be issued within 48 hours- or so he thought.

As the deadline approached for eagerly awaited findings at tea-time last night it emerged that Regan’s report will have to be approved by the Referee Committee.

For all Regan’s efforts to get to the root of the problem and deal with the matter his findings have to suit the seven honest men and true of SFA vice-president Alan McRae and the other members- Willie Young, Alan Freeland, Jim McCluskey, Donald McVicar, Sandy Roy and Ian Fyfe.

Six former referees and the chairman of Cove Rangers will decide whether Regan has got his report right or not!

As anticipation grew last night Darryl Broadfoot, SFA Head of Communications issued the following statement for Regan: “I can confirm I have concluded my investigation into the events during the recent Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Dundee United and Celtic.

“During this investigation, I spoke to the match referee, Dougie McDonald, his assistant, Steven Craven, Hugh Dallas, the Head of Referee Development, and Jim McBurney, the referee observer.

“On concluding my own investigation, and adopting due process, the matter has now been referred to the Referee Committee for consideration at their next scheduled meeting, which will be held on Friday, October 29. It would therefore not be appropriate to comment any further until the committee has met.”

Regan would have enjoyed executive decision making and authority in his previous job as CE of Yorkshire County Cricket.

Realising that anything he wishes to do at the SFA has to be approved by the relevant committee of the old boys network could quickly see the SFA recruiting again for his successor.
