Vennegoor of Hesselink gets the better of Sheridan

|

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink got the better of Cillian Sheridan tonight as Rapid Vienna won 2-0 away to CSKA Sofia in the Europa League.

The win keeps Rapid in contention for qualification but it looks like curtains for CSKA after losing their opening three matches.

Vennegoor of Hesselink opened the scoring for Rapid after 28 minutes and when Steffan Hofmann added a second goal three minutes later it was Goodnight Sofia as they say in Vienna.

Sheridan did have an early chance for the homeside but his shot was saved by Raimund Hedl in the Rapid goal.

The defeat comes on the back of some disappointing league form for CSKA who are sitting in ninth place in the championship with five games to go before the winter break.

In the other match in Group L Porto won 3-1 away to Besiktas to maintain their 100% record.

Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw away to Napoli while Shay Given spent another night on the bench as Manchester City beat Lech Poznan 3-1 with Joe Hart continuing in goals.
