The Commons factor

Kris Commons Celtic newsNeil Lennon believes that Kris Commons will thrive on the tension of tomorrow’s Rangers-Celtic Scottish Cup tie.

The former Derby winger is in for a hot reception from the home support after joining Celtic two days after Walter Smith had declared his interest in signing the Scotland international.

Commons has made a massive impact in his first two Celtic matches but faces his toughest test at Ibrox tomorrow.

The 27-year-old has previously switched from England to Scotland and Nottingham Forest to Derby but will experience something entirely different at Ibrox.

“I don’t think it’ll faze Kris Commons,” Lennon admitted of his former Forest team-mate. “I hope it doesn’t and I don’t think it will. He’s done the ultimate thing in the East Midlands, going from Nottingham Forest to Derby County.

“He had a pretty good time at Derby so I don’t think this will be much different for him in terms of how he handles it. I don’t think he was too popular in Nottingham.

“He’ll get stick at Ibrox anyway. The majority of the players will get stick or abuse or whatever it is you want to call it. They just have to get on with it.

“Some players revel in that and Kris is in that category. You try not to get caught up in the occasion and just play the game. The more experience they get of these fixtures the better they’ll become.”
