Neil Lennon explains Bilbao incident

Neil Lennon Celtic newsNeil Lennon has played down last night’s referee incident against Athletico Bilbao whilst praising his young side and the response of the supporters at last night’s 0-0 draw.

Celtic’s visit attracted a near capacity crowd to the San Mames stadium with the visitors given a warm welcome in the Basque country.

U-17 internationalists Marcus Fraser, Joe Chalmers and John Herron were given priceless experience against the side sitting in sixth place in La Liga with Anthony Stokes given the honour of captaining Celtic for the first time.

“Amazing game…we played fantastic football..the three young boys were immense while senior guys played superbly..so proud..atmosphere great,” the Celtic boss told his growing army of twitter followers.

“Would also like to thank Bilbao for their hospitality and their supporters were also fantastic to us and created an amazing atmosphere.”

Twitter fan mikeybhoy67 asked the Celtic boss about the fans with @officialneil replying: “They were amazing throughout.”

Ten minutes from half-time Lennon was ordered out of the technical area by referee Iturralde Gonzalez but the Celtic boss wasn’t dwelling on that incident.

He added: “Ref over fussy as I disputed a f kick….anyway we played some scintillating stuff against a class side and we should have won.”
