Paatelainen: To get two penalties would be too much

|

Mixu Paatelainen Celtic newsKilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen attempted to joke over the penalty controversies after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Ibrox today.

After conceding an 87th minute own goal the Ayrshire side had claims for a second penalty turned away by referee Alan Muir.

Kyle Lafferty clashed with Tim Clancy in the penalty box with Paatelainen attempting to avoid another refereeing controversy.

The Kilmarnock boss said: “We are grateful to get one penalty here, it’s a difficult place to get penalties so maybe two would have been too much.

“I thought they were good, strong cases but the referee thought not. So be it.

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t take anything from the game because we thoroughly deserved something. They were a little bit fortunate in the end to get that winner but good teams are fortunate.”

Asked again about the second penalty appeal he added: “I need to see it on tv, I don’t want to go into the debate about that.”

Referee Muir’s decision making left Walter Smith equally baffled with the Rangers boss feeling that his side should have had at least one penalty.

The Rangers boss said: “Were Kilmarnock not fortunate? Was Jelavic’s not a penalty? He turned the boy and was pulled down in the box and it was a penalty kick.

“If Kilmarnock’s penalty is a penalty and that one isn’t, then I’ve wasted my time in football for a long while. I couldn’t understand the decision.

“Also, I don’t mind any of the opposition wasting time at any given time, I don’t mind that all. But, for the Kilmarnock goalkeeper to go through 90 minutes wasting the amount of time that he wasted and for the referee not to speak to him once, was an amazing factor.

“It was absolutely amazing. In the European games, if our goalies try to waste time, the referees warn them early. Here, they don’t.

“It’s a fairly amazing one so I don’t think anyone could say anyone got away with any decisions. In fact, quite a few of the decisions over the 90 minutes were questionable.”

Muir was down to referee Wednesday’s Celtic v Hibs match but that has been postponed due to the rescheduled Scottish Cup tie at Inverness.

Joe I think you’ve been mis-quoting Nosurname here..
It’s a known fact that he never criticises referees
let alone dispute their decisions in public.
I honestly believe you’ve invented this to stir it up….
    he wouldn’t say that…he just wouldn’t, ‘cos he’s dignified.

Themz the facts Mike, honestly, no mistakes

That clown pitalineoan had conceded defeat before tha game anyway, so i take it he wasnt too disappointed at losing.

  • Krys says:

As I remember, Alan Muir was the referee at our 9-0 drubbing of Aberdeen. Everyone agreed he had a great game that day and was quite possibly the best referee we’ve had this season.

So why am I not surprised that the minute he does a Rangers game the Rangers manager is moaning about him?

  • Joe McHugh says:

    Good point Krys.

Being the best referee Celtic have had this season isn’t much of a compliment.

By the sound of it he didn’t have a good match yesterday and bottled out of the late penalty decision.

Whether it’s first or 90th minute a penalty is a penalty.

In the 9-0 match he gave two penalties to Celtic and sent off a player from each team, none of those decisions could be argued with, he did his job properly.

So we can expect the sfa to be dragging wattie over hot coals for disrespecting the sanctity of the referee some time soon then?
With his previous we must be looking at at least a six match ban eh?
The Scottish media, showing it’s ususl consistency, will tear him apart for this latest cantankerous neddery………………………
