A great Celtic weekend

Greig Spence Celtic newsIt started off at the Agii-Theodori stadium in Piraeus, Greece, continued in Bilbao and ended up back at Celtic Park.

Right across Europe it was a great weekend for the Celtic Academy.

Paul George set the ball rolling with a late equaliser for Ireland’s u-17’s against Greece to give John Morling’s side a chance of qualifying for the finals of the European Championships.

At the San Mames stadium in Bilbao Joe Chalmers, John Herron and Marcus Fraser were catapulted into first team action and graduated with honours in front of Neil Lennon.

Chalmers, Herron and Fraser have only managed one u-19 start between themselves but didn’t look out of place against La Liga opposition.

And finally at Celtic Park Islam Feruz started his first u-19 match of the season and helped Stevie Frail’s side into the final of the SFA Youth Cup against Rangers next month.

“It’s been a fantastic weekend to be honest,” Frail admitted. “Chris (McCart) got a message late on Saturday about the Bilbao match, the three lads that started did really well by all accounts.

“They are from our u-17 team, that’s really pleasing and we followed that up with a win today and we’ve also got Greig Spence coming back.

“It’s good to see Greig getting back from injury, we’ve got a lot of games coming up, a lot of them away from home, and April is going to be a big month for us.

“Tony Watt and Jordan Lowdon also got a good run in Bilbao and Curtis Jones got a few minutes. They are coming back having played in front of 50,000 supporters in Bilbao and that’s fantastic for them and us.”

Closer to home the Green Brigade ensured a noisy atmosphere at the 3-0 win over Livingston with Frail hoping for similar backing from the fans at Hampden against Rangers.

He added: “Hopefully we’ll have the same backing in the final, the fans were excellent against Livingston, it certainly helps the players and generates an atmosphere. You could see that at the end standing to applaud them, they were first class.”
