Fraser Forster ready for nerve test

Fraser Forster Celtic newsFraser Forster insists that he’s ready for a nerve testing run-in to the title.

Celtic Park was a tense place to be yesterday as St Mirren held out quite comfortably for 78 minutes against Celtic’s best efforts.

There were flashbanks to the grim winter run that saw home points dropped to Dundee United, Inverness Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock before Kris Commons drilled in his seventh goal of the season since moving from Derby County.

With the ninety minutes ticking down there was one heart stopping moment when time stood still in the Celtic penalty box as the ball fell to John Potter.

Fortunately the defender shot past the post as Celtic used up one of their remaining lives in the title race with Forster braced for more drama before the championship is decided.

“There will be games like that before the end of the season, full of nerves and late winners,” the Geordie explained. But it’s about getting three points – it doesn’t matter how. This wasn’t our best performance but we won in the end.

“We had a scare right at the death when Potter got free in the box but his shot didn’t test me. He got a lot of space but luckily he didn’t score. It is results like this one that help you win the league.

“There will be games like this where we’ve just got to grind out results and it won’t be pretty to watch. I didn’t really have a save to make and I’m happy with that. I’d take it every day of the week.”

Forster added: “The crowd were fantastic. They obviously expected us to come out and score sooner. We set our standards high in our 3-1 win over Hibs in midweek.

“The fans turn up knowing we can play as well as that and hope we’ll perform the same again.

“They pay good money to come and see good football – but against Saints was one of those times when we it just wasn’t going for us and we had to grind out the result.”
