Mick McCarthy's great escape relegates Alex McLeish

|

Mick McCarthy Celtic newsFormer Celt Mick McCarthy enjoyed the great escape as the Premiership relegation dogfight claimed Blackpool and Birmingham City.

On paper Wolves had the easiest task of the five clubs in danger but found themselves three goals down at halftime and staring the Championship in the face.

The Wolves team were booed off the pitch at half-time by their furious fans as they dropped into the relegation zone on goal difference.

Despite briefly taking the lead at Old Trafford Blackpool’s helpless task was confirmed by a 4-2 defeat which left Wolves, Wigan and Birmingham scrapping over one relegation spot.

When Craig Gardner equalised for Birmingham at Spurs it lifted Alex McLeish’s side out of the drop zone but almost simultaneously Wigan went in front away at Stoke.

Wolves had pulled a goal back at home to Blackburn but it took an 87th minute goal from Ireland internationalist Stephen Hunt to lift them above Birmingham on goals scored with both teams level on points and goal difference.

As Birmigham desperately chased the goal that would save their Premiership status Roman Pavluchenko scored an injury time winner for Spurs that confirmed Birmingham’s relegation.
