Malky MackayMalky Mackay enjoyed a winning start to his reign at Cardiff City ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Celtic.

On the outskirts of Seville with 100 Cardiff fans watching Mackay’s side beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 to round off a week of intensive training in the sun.

Without the departed Michael Chopra, Jay Bothroyd and Chris Burke, Mackay has been charged with following Swansea into the Premiership following the departure of Dave Jones after another play-off disappointment.

Lee Naylor and David Marshall are currently at Cardiff with former Dundee United midfielder Craig Conway making his debut against Charlton.

After the final whistle Mackay spoke to his squad in the centre circle and explained: “I spoke to them about the amount of work they have put in over this week despite the intense heat.

“I am proud of the attitude and the effort of every one of them. That hard work showed because overall we were a little bit sharper than Charlton.

“The fans, too, played their part. They came to a little town deep in southern Spain and got behind their team. They are passionate about their club and I knew that about Cardiff fans before I became manager.”

Looking back at the week he added: “It’s been fast-paced and there has been an awful lot of change in all sorts of areas including the squad and staff.

“I am bringing my ideas to Cardiff and everybody has played their part over the first month. If everybody can push in one direction we can make good progress.”
