SPL Celtic newsSPL chief Neil Doncaster wants to hear fans views on when to start the season.

This season’s early start seems to have caught whinging Terry Butcher by surprise but has been fairly well received by supporters with Celtic enjoying a sunshine win at Hibs, a weekend in Dublin and another Sunday trip at the weekend- this time to Aberdeen.

While the results of Scottish teams in Europe hasn’t been transformed by the early start to the season Hearts and Rangers both had the benefit of an SPL game under their belts before facing European ties.

Unlike recent seasons Celtic have been spared from early European action and will have played three SPL games before threy enter the Europa League.

In his latest blog entry Doncaster goes into detail about the different issues that were discussed before decising on the early start..

One benefit of the early start that has gone virtually un-noticed is the lack of midweek cards with just two scheduled, one on December 28 when Celtic play Rangers and the other after the plit in May.

Explaing the decision making Doncaster wrote: “There is simply no magical solution. We cannot start late, avoid mid-week fixtures in the winter, and also showcase our product at a time when our nearest neighbours are not playing football – these three objectives are mutually exclusive.

“Anecdotally, feedback I have had from supporters has been that they have enjoyed going to matches in the sunshine over the past fortnight. Before any decision is made on the start date for next year, I would encourage fans to let us know their thoughts on the 23 July kick-off this season.“
