Shunsuke Nakamura Celtic newsCeltic fans have been luckier than most down the years when it comes to watching special free-kicks.

In the early eighties the chant of ‘Murdo Murdo’ would inevitably go up anytime that a free kick was awarded within 30 yards of goal with the midfielder looking to blast the ball through the defensive wall.

Davie Provan’s free kick against Dundee United in the 1985 Centenery Scottish Cup Final is probably one of the most memorable in Celtic’s history sparking a famous comeback to sink Dundee United 2-1.

John Collins provided the perfect advert for his new Predator boots when he found the net and silenced Ibrox in April 1994 then repeated the trick four months later in Tommy Burns’ first derby match as manager.

Pierre van Hooijdonk’s preferred distance was around 30 yards giving him the chance to forget about the wall and fire in a shot with power and pace.

Lubo Moravcik added quality to the Martin O’Neill era with the Slovakian capable of almost anything with either foot from any free kick awarded around the penalty box.

More recently Shunsuke Nakamura scored with plenty of free kicks including spectacular efforts home and away against Manchester United and a league clincher away at Kilmarnock.

Of the current side Charlie Mulgrew is probably the best with a free-kick highlighted by his Scottish Cup Final effort against Motherwell in May.

Through the years however I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a free kick taken the same way as Dare Vrsic of Slovenia with his special effort against Serbia on Tuesday night.

The goal was enough to eliminate Serbia with Estonia finishing runners up to Italy and claiming a play off spot.

Let me know if you’ve seen a better free-kick- the debate about Celtic’s best ever free kick could become lengthy!

    just bad keeping

  • The keeper should be dealing with that without much trouble, the ball was in the air for an eternity.

It’s not a patch on Naka’s against Man Utd. That was a truly great free kick, nobody was saving that.

I had to say Naka’s v Man Utd although i’ll never forgot Provans’s in 85 it was my 10th birthday. There must have been about 90,000. Those days you could pay at the gate to see a cup final.

We couldn’t get anywhere to stand to see the game i never saw much of the 1st half then at 1/2 time an old drunk guy saw i couldn’t see & told them to let me sit on the old rail things & we where right behind the goal & the old guy shouted i saw it in my dream hes going to score. good old days. heres hopin Ki & Mulgrew get a few this season

Joe what you been drinking mate? It was clearly an overhit lofted ball to the penalty area. Kaka said on television that Nakamuras free-kick v Man United was the best he’d seen. I agree.

  • Frank McGaaaarvey says:

Naka v ManU any day of the year but I admit I am somewhat biased.

Anyone remember Roberto Carlos’ for Brazil v France in some World Cup warm-up tourney around 1998? The one that swerved about 4 different directions before bursting the net? Goooooooooaaaaaaalllllllll!

  • Stevie says:

Naka v Manu everyday of the week. Not only to do it once but twice in the same tie.
