Martin O'Neill Celtic newsMartin O’Neill is expected to be announced as the new Sunderland manager today.

Less than 48 hours after the sacking of Steve Bruce it seems that the former Celtic and Aston Villa boss could be in charge of Sunderland although caretaker Eric Black is expected to be in charge for Sunday’s match away to Wolves.

There is almost universal coverage of a meeting between O’Neill and Sunderland owner Ellis Short in London yesterday where a deal appears to have been agreed paving the way for the Iruishman to return to football.

O’Neill has kept a low profile since resigning from Aston Villa on the eve of the 2010/11 season and is notoriously unpredictable as various clubs, including Celtic, have discovered during negotiations.

If O’Neill takes the Sunderland job he is likely to demand a sizeable transfer kitty for January despite the high turnover of players at Sunderland in the summer.

Bruce’s shopping spree saw Wes Brown and John O’Shea recruited from Manchester United alongwith nine other new faces.

Sunderland are currently siting in 16th place in the Premiership just two points above the relegation zone with two wins from 13 matches.

As a boyhood Sunderland fan O’Neill will meet with the instant approval of most Sunderland fans. Saturday’s home defeat from Wigan was watched by just 37,000 fans with Bruce’s Newcastle background coming to the fore during supporter unrest.
