The 1980s scarfer

Celtic scarfFirstly I would like to wish all my fellow Bhoys & Ghirls a Merry Christmas when it comes.

I pondered what to write about and decided as a collector of all things Celtic that I would pick a scarf from the 1980’s that I keep all my metal badges on.

I started collecting badges at Secondary school when it was the done thing to swap metal badges or even sew on patches (remember those ).

Coffer sports were a main player in the manufacture of football items including cloth and metal badges. If I remember correctly the company were based near Northampton and I believe they ceased trading in the mid 1980’s.

Some of their badges are quite rare now and I have seen some sell for up to £20 each on ebay. Although my main collection is that of programmes I do keep my eyes on other things and have some items dating back to the 50’s and 60’s which are mainly photographs or cigarette cards.

I laugh when I tell my son of the days I used to attend matches with 3 scarves and a flag. The general rule was one scarf tied around each wrist and main scarf with badges around my neck and somewhere in between I managed time to wave my tricolour.

I wore similar to the 1982 Scottish League Cup Final against Rangers when we beat Rangers 2-1 with Murdo and Charlie scoring. Great game although in those days no roof over the Celtic end so I also had a green, white & yellow bunnet on as it was teaming with rain.

God when I think back I must have looked a sight but plenty people wore similar. I even remember going to Ibrox with one of those foghorns which I took to most away grounds to help start off the singing, ah yes those were the days.

So much atmosphere was lost when they took the terraces away with the Jungle never to be replaced.

So that’s my lot for now, if you have any items of interest it would be great to hear about them and finally I would like to say to my late father – first Christmas since you passed away Dad, always in my thoughts – God Bless.

Haha, brings back memories I also used to wear at least 2 scarfs, a celtic t-shirt, sweat bands a tammy, badges and carry a celtic bag.

My room was decked out with celtic wallpaper, duvet cover, pillowcase and there were photos of Nicholas, Bonner and an old hand coloured picture of buzz bomb Lennox on the wall.

I used to stand next to the old woman with the celtic teddy bear at the front right of the celtic end. The league cup final 1982 will always be one of my favourite memories. Totally soaking and deliriously happy.

Bring a tear to a glass eye 🙂 I did exactly the same. I remember collecting the badges, and my maw sewing on the patches.

She actually knitted my favourite ever scarf. I had a tricolour wi a cartoon Celtic player in the middle lol Fingers crossed for the 28th.

Merry Christmas and a champion New Year!

I remember the woman with the teddy also, used to walk past her on the way out of the Jungle.

Wonder where she is now ?

    All the best

I used to buy a badge every week as I thought it brought us luck !!

Had to stop wearing them all though as it weighed a ton. Had one of those scarfs too Joe and well remember being absolutely drenched at that cup final…also when Harry Hood scored a hat-trick against them in a semi-final sure it was pouring down that night as well.

Happy days and hopeful of a lot more to come yet.
