Stephen Craigan Motherwell newsStephen Craigan entered the record books on Saturday as he took his SPL own goal tally to EIGHT.

Saturday’s strike for Dundee United took the Motherwell skipper past Darren Dods and was his second since the turn of the year following his ‘first footing’ at Ibrox on January 2.

Despite the unfortunate own goal Motherwell hit back to earn a draw thanks to Michael Higden’s second half strike but the goalscorers celebration gesture at his own fans is likely to land him in trouble with the SFA.

Own goals have been a feature of Craigan’s career having also put through his own net for Partick Thistle and Northern Ireland as well as in cup competitions.

In May at Hampden Mark Wilson was happy to claim the credit for Celtic’s second goal in the Scottish Cup Final but his shot took an almighty ‘deflection’ past goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

After Saturday’s record breaker Randolph said: “Crags must feel like the unluckiest man in the world, but own goals are just part of being a centre-half. He got some stick over it.

“He’s not had a lot of luck lately. He says if he was playing for United he’d have got a hat-trick and we’d have won 3-0. It’s just the way it’s going at the moment.”
