Tony Mowbray Middlesbrough newsFormer Celtic boss Tony Mowbray is no longer taking honest mistakes on the chin.

Mowbray’s brief spell as Celtic boss was characterised by many things with one of them a refusal to criticise refereeing decisions.

Whatever dubious decisions went against Celtic Mowbray backed away from commenting on the performance of officials.

When Craig Levein joked about Daren Dods being disappointed about not holding onto the ball in a handball incident Mowbray stayed quiet.

When Shaun Maloney was chopped twice in the penalty box at Ibrox and booked by Craig Thomson the Teesider backed off from complaining and instead criticised the defending of his own players.

Middlesbrough’s 3-1 defeat at Coventry on Saturday was their third defeat in a row as the competition heats up for a play-off spot.

Former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thompson picked up yellow cards in the 28th and 38th minutes prompting his manager to hit out angrily at referee Gary Sutton.

Mowbray said: “The first red card is a lack of man-management from the referee, in my opinion. He had a difficult day and it was hard to read him. Some things he let go and others he was jumping on.

“He let everything go for quarter of an hour and then produced two yellow cards and I had every sympathy for Kevin.

“I don’t think you can argue with Julio’s (Arca’s injury time red card) in the modern climate. You’d have to say Julio left the ground, even though there was no contact and no danger of hurting the player.”

Scott McDonald scored the consolation goal for the visitors, on Sunday ‘Boro travel to meet Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland in the FA Cup.
