Are European games better than Rangers matches?

Shunsuke Nakamura Celtic newsWith a 17 point lead in the SPL , hopefully 20 after the Dunfermline match,  it would be very easy to get carried away and to take it as read that we will win the league. Lets be clear, it’s going to take something incredible to happen for us not to win it now but the players can’t get into the mindset that it’s all over and done with.

They always say that it’s not over till the fat lady sings, I think she’s clearing her vocal chords without having started to sing yet.

I think that we will win it, but I have also thought that in the past and I’ve turned out to be wrong. Really, I don’t want to sound negative here but if you can, have a thought about how bad it’s going to look if we didn’t finish the season as league champions.

Ok, if you’re still with me after that thought, then we can move on.

A lot is being made of the fact that we could clinch it at Ibrox, my personal preference would be to have the league clinched at home and to them play Rangers FC (in administration) at home as champions.

I am very sure that since Neil Lennon has experienced heartache in past campaigns that he will not be taking anything for granted so hats off to Neil and the team for the result and performance that they produced v Hibs on Sunday.

Some may argue now that with such a big gap between us and the rest, that it will become even more difficult to keep our focus so here’s hoping that we can have a good spirited performance and that we can enjoy a big party at each of our games between now and the end of the season.

With the amount of, in my opinion, idiots, who tell us a league win would be devalued, I think the best way to shut them up would be win it by a record breaking margin.

Next item on my agenda, or rant if you prefer, is songs of hatred and bigotry. Thankfully, I didn’t have to witness the hatred that spouted from the stands of our cash strapped rivals on Saturday, but I have been hearing that it’s as bad as it was on last years League Cup Final.

The easy thing now is for us to say ‘well they are going unpunished for it so we should be allowed to do it too’. I’d urge our fans not to follow that mindset and to keep up with any of the non offensive songs that we are famous for.

Call me paranoid, but if we were to sing songs and to be found guilty, I wouldn’t put it past the SFA, or relevant powers that be, to introduce the deduction of points that’s been proposed in the past try and close the gap between us and whoever happens to be in second place.

My final point is something that I touched on in my most recent piece for this site. I made it clear that I don’t think that we need a strong Rangers FC (in administration). Well instead of going over that point, does anyone know why we would need them to be strong?

So far, the only people that I’ve heard saying that we do need them are people who are not fans of Celtic.

No more derby games is the only viable argument I have heard yet, maybe some readers can convince me otherwise?

I have to be honest and say that yes, I would miss them but I would also say that I get much more enjoyment out of any European run than I have ever had against Rangers FC (in administration). If it was a straight choice between the two, I’d prefer the European games. Of course, it’s not a choice at all and we have no control over what happens anyway but I guess there’s no harm in discussing it.

Also, I’ve opened up an account on Twitter, so feel free to give me any feedback on this or anything else I’ve written @1888steven.

And if you’re the person who has @steven1888, can I have my name back please?

remember,we also have a number of fools in our support who could ruin it all for our club,so no sectarian nonsense from yesteryear and the people who are waiting to nail us are gonny be sick in frustration that they cant get us.

I think a more apt question would be how do we feel about the overall experience of, let’s say, losing 3-1 to Barcelona at home and beating Rangers away 1-0? Personally I think the European games have a more exciting build up and a better atmosphere. The result is the be all and end all against them, but in Europe it’s about a lot more. Complex question really…

    Steven,

Firstly, let me say i agree totally that we need to be vigilant with our support over the coming weeks. Any chance to stick the boot in to us would be gratefully received by many people right now.

Secondly, given the choice, i’d much rather win the league at Ibrox. I know it’s petty reasoning but after the season they’ve had, twisting the knife that wee bit more would be great. My only concern about that scenario is that the Rangers fans are hardly known for taking defeat in a dignified way (surprising really…) and our fans could be in real danger that day.

Finally, give me a European tie any day. I’ve always felt that it’s a more important arena for us as a club to test ouselves. Let Rangers be content with their “Dundee and Hamilton”, i’d rather have Rome, Barcelona, Munich etc! Plus teams in Europe actually try to play football, it’s a refreshing change! (and really, can anything beat hearing the Champions League anthem blaring out at Paradise!?)

Yeah totally european games are by far the best enterainment football can offer scotland.and the best advertisement for future genarations of potential celtic supporters.no more hate filled away end.or disgusting songs of bigotry but most importantly no more being tarred with the shame brush.by poor excuse`s for media pundits calling my team part of the old firm.instead we`d have exciting attacking football and the experiance that go`s with it.its like comparing messi with david healy.see i put his first name in there incase people were`nt sure who he is.

I can’t recall anyone saying it was bad for the game when Murray was throwing cash around buying players like Flo etc….or winning titles easily as he had no competition. Yet now it is suddenly a blight on Scottish Football. What about the years when Rangers were crap and regularly finished 4th or under….did Scottish Football collapse ???

When Aberdeen had their hey day, we were fine. The removal of Rangers simply means that smaller clubs can keep their better players or perhaps buy from other clubs as they can see success. WHen Hibs / Hearts were relegated they both played to excellent crowds as they played good football and were winning.

Clubs like Kilmarnock, Dunfermline, Motherwell attract decent crowds when they reach a cup final so why not if they are at least challenging for the title. Are we saying that every one of Rangers fans will STOP attending ANY games not involving Rangers in future…I think not they will return to the Dundee’s, Motherwell’s, Airdrie’s or whoever.

Enough of the scare stories….no one can say for certain. Shug K told us all the legue was over in November….then it was over AGAIN last week…so what does he know HEE HAW.

  • James V the h**s actually frightened me when I was young (and do you wonder?) – remember I was witnessing ogres like Geordie Young and Willie Woodburn (the only professional player to ever be sine die’d for life – suspended or banned for the children out there – from Scottish football.

I know it’s hard to believe he wasn’t a Celtic player to get that. Shows you how bad it must have been. Those were the days of fitba pants tae yer ankles, shirts made from the equivalent to Harris tweed, shin pads like the leggings of a suit of armour (ye needed them) and tackety boots covered in dubbin and wi’ studs ye battered in wi a claw hammer – needed a claw tae pull them back oot a wee bit as it was inevitable ye’d hammer them right through the sole; the days when sliding tackles didn’t break ye’r leg, aw naw, they took ye’r heed aff instead.

Ach, you young ‘ns just don’t know what ye missed. Often wish a had! As I matured (did I?) Naw, these games got me worked up not excited. But European nights and many days before, now that was excitement. Derby’s not in the hunt even though the pills were either more bitter or sweeter to swallow but for sheer fitba’ enjoyment and the crowds, nothing could beat European nights and in my day there were plenty.

Why is every old frim game sold out and European matches are not? Simply put, Celtic fans as a whole enjoy the old firm matches. There is nothing like beating R*ngers! HH
