Lennon praises the Commons touch

Neil Lennon has singled out Kris Commons for praise after his side demolished Rangers 3-0 to soar 21 points ahead of the Ibrox side.

The midfielder has had a chequered season with the Glasgow grapevine buzzing with stories of bust-ups between the two men earlier in the season.

Commons bagged 15 goals last season after signing in January14 but today’s strike was his first of the season.

Great work by Gary Hooper on the right created an opening for the former Nottingham Forest man who took his chance with style to plant the ball beyond Allan McGregor.

“I threw the gauntlet down at Kris before the game,” Lennon admitted. “But he was tremendous, I wanted him to be the big player- you have to be in that system. He played in-between the lines and was terrific for us.

“It’s been a frustrating season for him in terms of injuries and maybe a lack of confidence on his part.

“We always knew that there was a good player there and you never lose that ability. It was just a question of working on his mindset.

“Over the last month he’s been fantastic for us and I’m so pleased that he got his goal- it encapsulated his performance.”

Commons admitted: “The win meant everything. They’ve beat us twice this year, we’d beaten them once, so for us to put a performance in like that under the circumstances was brilliant.

“It’s a local derby and you want to win. The boys put in a hell of a shift, to score three goals and not concede any is brilliant.”
