Callum McGregor hat-trickCallum McGregor wrote his name into the Celtic history books last night with a hat-trick in the 8-0 SFA Youth Cup win over Queen of the South.

The midfielder scored with two penalties either side of a typical opportunist strike, sliding in at full stretch to net at the back post from a Dylan McGeough cross.

McGregor has been a regular scorer since the turn of the year and formed a key midfield partnership with Jackson Irvine as Celtic swept to the double.

Turning on the style on the big stage capped a fantastic season for the u-19 side who scored 26 goals in five matches on their way to retaining the trophy.

“I was delighted that we got the win and as a personal touch to get three goals at Hampden was brilliant,” McGregor smiled.

“Last season’s final with Rangers was a better match but we had to win tonight, we stuck to our task and were excellent.

“We worked hard in pre-season and that has paid off for us with trophies.

“With five across the middle everyone can interchange and move the ball around a lot, I feel we’ve been tremendous this season.

“Last season I was one of the younger players, before the game John Kennedy said that the experience of myself, Jackson Irvine, Liam Gormley to use our experience of winning last season.”

While McGregor’s first two goals were well struck his third, from the penalty spot, was struck straight at Queens keeper Jim Atkinson before squirming over the line.

“The keeper had guessed the right way with the first penalty so I decided to smash it down the middle and hope that he moves,” the hoops midfielder added.

“He never moved, I was a bit lucky but that’s the way it goes. I saw it creep over the line and that was a relief.”
