Stephen McManus newsBristol City are hoping to complete the permanent transfer of Stephen McManus from Middlesbrough this week.

The former Celtic skipper spent a month on loan at Ashton Gate and is wanted by Bristol City boss Derek McInnes.

McManus has one year left on his contract at the Riverside Stadium and is one of the clubs highest paid players after signing for Gordon Strachan in July 2010 following a loan spell at the club.

‘Boro boss Tony Mowbray has to trim the club wagebill and is prepared to accept a fee in the region of £150,000 for the defender who cost the club £1.2m.

The departure of McManus would leave Scott McDonald as the only former Celt left at ‘Boro. Willo Flood left the club 12 months ago for Dundee United with Barry Robson quitting for the MLS at the end of the season.

McManus made seven appearances for Bristol City last season and could be reunited with Stephen Pearson who signed a two year deal at the club last week.

The midfielder was out of contract at Derby County and was one of McInnes’ first loan signings when he joined the club in November from St Johnstone.

After signing his deal the former Motherwell and Celtic midfielder said: “I really enjoyed my six-month spell at the club and it’s great that we’ve been able to agree a deal for two more seasons.

“The club is going through a lot of change and it’s a very exciting one to be part of. I’m sure the manager has his targets even though it is still early in the transfer window, but I’m just can’t wait to get back for pre-season training now.

“I had other options available to me and could have waited but I enjoyed my time at Ashton Gate so much that I knew this was the right club for me.

“The manager showed a lot of faith bringing me to the club and playing me in a lot of games and I can’t thank him enough.”
