SFA football newsScotland’s u-16 side produced one of the most remarkable ever ‘international’ results today when they beat AC Milan 7-1 at the Besov Cup in St Petersburg.

The match was a 5th/6th place play-off after both teams had finished in third place in their group.

Kilmarnock striker Robbie Muirhead led the way with four goals as the young Scots signed off in style with a stunning win against the Serie A outfit.

Muirhead had Scotland 2-0 up after eight minutes and completed his hat-trick before the interval with Jamie Beaton also on target as the Scots went in 4-0 up at half-time.

Danny Storey and Tom Walsh stretched Scotland’s lead after the break before the Italians pulled a goal back but the Scots weren’t finished with Muirhead scoring his fourth before the final whistle blew.

After the match the striker tweeted: “I may as well retire tomorrow, it doesn’t get any better than scoring 4 for your country and scoring 4 against AC Milan eh?”

Celtic’s Liam Henderson tweeted: “ Beat AC Milan 7-1! @robbbmuirhead15 with 4 goals! #class #buzz.”

Hoops team-mate Calum Watters added: “Beat AC Milan today, great performance by the lads!”

The result was all the more remarkable after Scotland had drawn their opening two group matches against Zenit St Petersburg 3-3 and FC Krasnodar 1-1, before losing 3-1 to hosts Zenit St Petersburg.

There were six Celtic players in the 18 strong Scotland squad underlining the prominence of the club in the under-age international sides.

Glad to see the boys performed as they can. Disappointing to lose out to Zent by missing 2 pens when leading 1-0. But great experience for all concerned…now hope they can enjoy a good & very well deserved rest.
