Thompson: SPL views are hardening against newco

|

SPL Celtic newsDundee United chairman Stephen Thompson believes that a newco Rangers will struggle to get voted back into the SPL.

With the prospect of Charlie Green’s CVA being accepted looking highly unlikely Duff and Phelps have already drawn up plans for a newco taking over the assets of the existing club.

That plan is now in doubt with HMRC ready to appoint their own liquidator rather than accept a CVA offering a maximum of nine pence in the pound while assets worth £50m or more are transferred to the newco.

Last week the SPL backed off from providing a framework for the transfer of the SPL share to a newco with Thompson claiming that Rangers are running out of sympathy with other clubs.

The Tannadice chief told the BBC: “I’d have my doubts whether they’d get sufficient votes to get back in.

“It wouldn’t be just a simple yes or no vote, they’d have to negotiate their way back in again. That might not be easy for them.

“There’s been a lack of remorse shown. Views have hardened. Taking things to a court of law hasn’t helped. That’s certainly hardened views of people within the game.

“Next week the CVA will be decided. Next week will be the turning point and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Like most SPL clubs United have found season ticket sales moving slowly with fans holding back till the fate of Rangers is decided.

“One or two are holding back,” Thompson admitted. “I’ve no doubt about that and that affects what I’m capable of doing with regard to bringing players in.

“It’s not just people who are 15, 16-years-old on message boards, I’m talking about people writing in who have been season ticket holders for 30 or 40 years with very, very strong feelings.

“It’s damaging for the game. Most fans of other clubs outside Rangers are fed up with the whole scenario. All we really want is clarity so that we can all move on.”

  • In spite of this, I am not convinced the majority will vote against. If they don’t then it proves that not even money far less supporters counts when it comes to protecting ‘our own’. We all know them and have experienced the back-draft of their hidden agendas in every walk of Scottish life.

I suspect that the backlash from voting in a newco to the SPL will have a devastating effect on clubs like Dundee Utd…i hope they know what they are doing because it will finish Scottish football if such a disgraceful team are allowed back in. Supporters will vote with their feet and by then it will be too late to change it again. They have a great opportunity to vote for sporting integrity against greed, cheating, fraud, deceit, corruption and a plethora of other criminal activities…be very careful about what you don’t wish for…
