Wayne Rooney has revealed that he’s never seen Alex Ferguson angrier than the night Manchester United lost to Celtic.
Despite the heart-break of last day title losses and Champions League final defeats to Barcelona losing to Celtic upset Fergie more than anything.
The Govan born pensioner grew up as a Rangers fan and signed for his boyhood heroes in 1965 in a £65,000 deal from Dunfermline.
A 4-0 Scottish Cup Final defeat from Celtic ended his playing days at Ibrox with the agony of that experience still simmering almost 40 years later.
A signature free-kick from Shunsuke Nakamura put Celtic in front with Artur Boruc’s penalty save from Louis Saha sealing Celtic’s win against a star-studded United team.
In his new book, My Decade, hoops fan Rooney reveals: “Louis missed a last-minute penalty. I played poorly and we lose 1-0. In the dressing room, the manager lets loose.
“It’s the worst hairdryer I’ve seen. He’s in Louis’ face, shouting and screaming. But Louis isn’t the only one getting an earful.
“The manager knows I’ve been negotiating a new deal with the club and he saves some for me.
“Players wanting more money from the club and new deals… you don’t deserve anything after that performance!
“He doesn’t look my way but I know where he’s aiming the comments. I don’t like it, but he’s right.
“After that performance, I don’t deserve an improved contract and there’s nothing worse than getting the hairdryer from Sir Alex.
“When it happens, the manager stands in the middle of the room and loses it at me.”

One of Parkheads great nights. Nice to get one over Whiskey Nose and the EPL.
Will never forget the euphoria in the ground after the penalty save & the final whistle.
All loving the Vapours ‘Turning Japanese’ on the pa system
😀
Hee, hee, it makes the memory even sweeter.
I’m pretty I read/heard about that at the time. Still great though. (You know his dad was supposedly a Celtic fan though – and of his sons, I’m told).
The 4-0 game recalls the Hugh McIlvanney story about Fergie going to Simon to cimplain about being put in the reserves for ages after that game.
“Why am I in the reserves boss?” asks Ferguson.
“Cos we haven’t got a fuckin third team!” he replied.
My best memory of that 4-0 was seeing ferguson headbutt Bobby Murdoch in an off the ball incident in the middle of the park, and Murdoch just looking at him holding out his hands and smiling at him. The score at the time was already 4-0.
One of those truly magical nights….let’s hope for a few more in the coming weeks.
Not sure why Fergie would be so angry, after all they cheated us down at OT – we deserved to take something from the game.
Maybe the reason Rooney had a quiet game had something to do with Mr. Balde and Co.
I’m pretty sure Balde wasn’t playing with us at this time. Strachan made him sit in the stands for a year or two remember
Usually a pesamistic hoop,BUT JUST GOT A weeeee feeling about this campaign…..YNWA…
Just goes to show what means the most to the old git.
Fantastic night fantastic party. HH
Jimbhoy…….Didn’t think my memory was playing tricks on me this time
Celtic (4-4-2): Boruc; Telfer, Baldé, McManus, Naylor; Gravesen, Sno (Maloney, h-t), Lennon, Nakamura (Miller, 85); Vennegoor, Zurawski (Jarosik, h-t). Substitutes not used: Marshall (gk), Wilson, McGeady, O’Dea
By no means our best euro night in terms of football played…but the goal itself is up there with the best
Celtic plus it was WGS as manager, no wonder he was beelin’!!!!
