Neil Doncaster SPL newsAfter spending much of the year predicting Armageddon for Scottish football Neil Doncaster has congratulated himself for the rude health that the game is in!

Having ignored the issue of dual contracts, an HMRC investigation and unaudited accounts the SPL suddenly found the future of one of their major members beyond saving following the administration of Rangers in February.

Showing the lack of leadership that his tenure has been noted for Doncaster attempted to rewrite the rule books claiming that liquidation was simply a way of cancelling debt.

After failing to convince SPL members to accept Rangers newco into the SPL he was closely linked to the First Division option put together by Stewart Regan amid a campaign of scaremongering to force the issue through.

Doncaster warned of a massive reduction in income for clubs if Rangers newco were to be excluded from the SPL for more than a year but the reality is somewhat different as the former Norwich chief explained.

“We’ve had to re-invent ourselves but that’s happened pretty quickly and clubs have adapted,” he explained to the BBC.

“It was a traumatic summer for everyone involved in the game in Scotland. We were delighted to see the season get under way and the focus be back on football once again.

“There’d been so much discussion around the whole Rangers situation. To get the season under way, to then be looking forward rather than back was a great relief for everyone.

“The SPL and the clubs have adapted remarkably well to what people really couldn’t ever see happening.

“It was such an unforeseeable thing that one of the major houses, the economic power houses, in Scottish football should suddenly be out of the SPL.

“I don’t think anyone around the world who you speak to can quite believe that what happened happened, but it did.

“All of our major partners and major sponsors, they’ve stuck with the SPL and that’s enabled the clubs and the league to go forward with huge confidence.

“People had the opportunity to walk away over the summer and chose not to. They’ve stuck with the league and that’s important.”

Doncaster’s defence of his summer action is that he was duty bound to provide clubs with a worst case scenario following the demise of Rangers.

The purpose of a six figure salary with generous benefits is to ensure a best case scenario.

“The SPL and the clubs have adapted remarkably well to what people really couldn’t ever see happening” – does he really think all the “people” were of the same thought as him.

  • as you pointed out in your article if it was a mickey mouse league”SPL” then of course its directors would only get mickey mouse wages.

We can start making advances when we get rid of clowns like Doomcaster – Regan and the rest who were found to be badly wanting when the pressure was on.

  • frankiebhoy says:

How on earth can Doncaster describe them as an economic powerhouse when they left debts of over 100 million pounds in their wake? He really is a class act.

  • Ciaran says:

How could any league survive without the charms of a club that won’t pay tax, N.I., transfer fees or cup revenue?

Also let’s not forget the sudden, inexplicable increase in sectarian singing in Division 3.

How can we live without that?

  • Dhougal says:

Ahh , dont forget the ”charity game” between THEM v AC Milan , SHAMELESS MOB even took from that !!! Bye Bye TGers

  • StandAndDeliver says:

Complete and utter moron of a man. Weeks ago he was telling the World that Scottish Football was finished, COULD NOT SURVIVE, now all of a sudden he brushes off his months of scaremongering and attempts at corruption like it was nothing.
