Scottish League newsGreedy Elgin City have been forced to postpone Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash with Sec after selling too many tickets!

It’s believed that around 1,000 additional tickets for the Borough Briggs ground had been sold forcing Grampian Police to call the game off.

An SFL spokesman said: “Following today’s pre-ops meeting for the above match, it has come to light that there has been a substantial over-sale of tickets for this fixture and Elgin City Football Club could not confirm the exact number of tickets which have been sold for this match.

“Therefore, on the grounds of public safety and in close consultation with all parties, this match has now been postponed.

“Further information regarding tickets which have been sold will be provided as quickly as possible.

“Elgin City F.C. would like to apologise sincerely for this disappointing outcome. The SFL will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances.”

Match Commander Superintendent Mark Cooper said: “On Friday afternoon it came to light that tickets for Saturday’s Elgin City v Rangers fixture had been substantially oversold. After discussions with the club it was clear that we were faced with the prospect of at least 1,100 extra fans turning up for what was an already sold-out fixture.

The postponement is bound to be costly for Elgin who could also be punished by the SFL.

Earlier today Elgin chairman Graham Tatters said: “We’ve had the scaffolders in and nine of us even went through a First Aid course with the defibrillator. We have doctors and everything at the club but just want to be as well prepared as we can for such a big crowd.

“We don’t care the lengths we need to go to because the bottom line is you’d normally be crying out for this. The Rangers security guy Dave Martin was pleased with our preparations.

“We don’t want to let ourselves down so it has been a general tidying up of the ground and getting safety certificates. We wanted to ensure we were bang up to date with everything.”
