Alex Salmond Hearts newsFirst Minister Alex Salmond has acknowledged Celtic’s stunning win over Barcelona in the Scottish parliament.

Praise and congratulations has poured in from across the world of football after Neil Lennon’s side beat the Catalan giants with Coatbridge teenager Tony Watt scoring the decisive goal.

Salmond has never been slow to jump on a populist bandwagon such as Olympic medals and finally went on record to record his praise for Celtic in the Scottish parliament yesterday.

Earlier this year the First Minister had expressed his concerns for Celtic should Rangers go into liquidation but those fears have proved groundless as Neil Lennon’s side square up to Europe’s elite.

In February he told Al Jazeera: “The most diehard Celtic supporter understands that Celtic can’t prosper unless Rangers are there.

“The rest of the clubs understand that as well, therefore you have to have cognisance of these things when you are pursuing public policy.

“Obviously HMRC have got to pursue in the public interest, taxation. Equally, they’ve got to have cognisance of the fact that we’re talking about a huge institution, part of the fabric of the Scottish nation as well as Scottish football, and everybody realises that”.

While Celtic’s win has raised the profile of the club and Scottish football across the globe Salmond seems more concerned by the tax troubles at Hearts.

The Edinburgh side have been running close to the wind with the tax authorities over the last few years and have sent out a plea for supporters to plough in £450,000 or the club could face closure next weekend.

A spokesman for Salmond said: “Like any Hearts supporter, the First Minister is concerned at the current situation at the club. All clubs facing financial difficulty must be treated even-handedly.”
