Barcelona newsBarcelona midfielder Xavi has vowed not to go easy on Benfica.

The midfielder was in top form against Spartak Moscow on Tuesday as the Catalans powered through to the last 16 of the Champions League with a match to spare.

With top spot assured from Group G it’s inevitable that Barcelona won’t be firing on all cylinders when they host Benfica in the final match of Group G.

An away win would take the Portugeuse side through regardless of what Celtic do against Spartak Moscow with the destiny of the group now in the hands of Jesus Jorge’s side.

Barcelona only ever play to win that is the only way we know,” Xavi promised. “We are happy we have won the group with a game to go but that does not mean we will not be looking to win the final game in the group.

“Winning produces momentum and we won’t want to break that momentum by relaxing and thinking the Benfica game does not matter.

“It is in front of our home fans and we want a victory for them. Whatever players Barcelona put out, we’re capable of beating any team, especially when we are at home.

“We have no alliance. We don’t care who progresses. But we will play fairly and we will play to win in the final game.”

Spartak Moscow have only pride to play for when they visit Celtic with coach Unai Emery receiving the dreaded vte of confidence following the 3-0 defeat from Barcelona.

Spartak owner Leonid Fedun said: “He has a contract for two years. He will work these two years.”
