Gary Hooper newsNeil Lennon wants his players to rediscover the goal trail.

Celtic enjoyed almost embarrassing levels of possession in the 2-0 win over St Mirren but the points weren’t secured until Gary Hooper netted in the 83rd minute that the points were secured.

Away from home Celtic have scored freely with Lennon hoping that the performance against St Mirren lays down a marker for improved home form.

“I would like to see us put teams away a little bit earlier,” the Celtic boss admitted. “If that comes then I think we will be rampant.

“There was a good focus and intensity to our play and I am glad to see Hooper scoring again.

“He is looking a lot sharper and trimmer and looks like he has the bit between his teeth so I was delighted he got his goal. Some of our play was very good.

“The formation seems to work with us, there was nothing stodgy about our play, we created good, clear-cut chances and with better finishing could have won the game more handsomely.”

Victor Wanyama opened the scoring for Celtic with the midfielder very much in demand following his commanding Champions League performances against Barcelona.

Lennon would love to put the midfielder onto a new deal but is struggling to get together with his representatives although talks with Gary Hooper’s agents are likely to take place.

We’re hoping to meet with his (Hooper’s) representatives soon,” Lennon explained. “For me, having spoken to him on a number of occasions, he’s very happy here. He’s a big player for us and he’s enhanced his reputation here no end.

“I’m not saying he owes us anything because he doesn’t but I think, in the short-term anyway, take the contract. It’s a very good offer we’ve put in front of him.

“There’s still a bit of mileage in it to go yet but I don’t think we’re far away.

“Same with Wanyama. If we can talk with his representatives again we will but that’s been maybe a month or so ago now and we’ve not heard anything back from them.”
