QC accuses police of overkill

|

police newsA number of legal figures have spoken out about their concerns over Saturday’s clash between Strathclyde Police and the Green Brigade.

Two hundred police officers swooped in on a planed march from the Gallowgate with 13 arrests made and video clips of the incidents quickly appearing on social media.

Older supporters were stunned by the images with many making comparisons with the tactics used in the eighties to deal with industrial disputes such as the miners strike and News International’s move to Wapping.

“From what I’ve seen, this is total overkill,” Brian McConnachie QC told the Herald. “I don’t care which team you support. How can this be considered a proportionate response to what seemed to be a peaceful protest.

We’ll know pretty soon exactly what went on, given the amount of video footage. It’s a fine line between an unlicensed procession and a police state. If the police believed there was going to be an issue they had days to resolve it. They’d an opportunity to discuss it. It’s pretty clear 200 officers with cameras and batons just seemed to be on hand for an unexpected incident.

“I’ve some degree of sympathy with the police. The SNP Government, the Crown Office and our ‘Green Brigade supporting’ Lord Advocate Mr Mulholland have created a policy, made it such a big issue police have no option but to react in a particular way. We’re also seeing this treated at summary level by sheriffs who are not inclined to disbelieve police.”

The SNP group leader on Glasgow City Council Graeme Hendry added: “I have been contacted by constituents concerned at the behaviour of Strathclyde Police on Saturday.

“Having seen photos of the kettling technique seemingly employed by the police on Saturday, I would also add my own concern at the appropriateness and proportionality of this technique.”

    Kevin
peter lawell is a paid employee of celtic fc and the supporters(including the ones at the march on Saturday) are shareholders in said club, is it to much for pl or any the any other board member to spare 30 mins of their fully expense paid day to make a comment on government sanctioned police brutality against their own fans, if not then I as a fan of over 40 yrs want nothing more to do with them and I want them out. asap!.

    keith.

    • mark says:

Agree 100% if the board don’t back the fans u want them out enough is enough HH

    • KevinBarry says:

Peter lawwel has came out in the past couple of months and said he backs the fans and has said that any bad treatment of the fans must be reported via supporters groups or Celtic security.
The police have got an agenda against the GB and they appear hell bent on ‘smashing’ them. The right avenues to go down are MPs as they’re the people who can put pressure on the police. Apart from making a statement backing the fans thus generating publicity there isn’t an awful lot PL can do.

      • mark says:

Cant remember lawwell backing the fans can remember a statement saying they knew nothing about what’s going on and if there is anything going on to report it the people at Celtic must be the only people connected to the club that don’t know what’s going on. If you think there doing enough fair play to you but I know different HH

Celtic made a statement regarding these matters only two weeks ago and this lastest incident only occured 48 hours ago. I’m sure Celtic will make a reasoned and measured statement when in full posession of ALL the facts, which is the right thing to do. Certain other clubs in this wee country get to shout and ball incessantly in the press without question.
        We do not.
When we as a club make a statement we must make sure that we get it right or the msm will make us pay.
This is a problem between the Celtic support and the police, but there will always be people, Celtic supporters and others, who will try to turn it in on the club and unfortunately a section of the support who will swallow it time and time again.
Peter Lawwell is an employee of Celtic FC, and as such opperates under the instructions of the club.

Ps, I’m not swallowing this, we’re all in it together’ bullshit. I don’t seem to remember the rozzers piling into the huns batons drawn when they illegally protested outside asbestox or illegally marched on Hampden, infact it’s patently obvious sevco supporters can do what they want with complete impunity as can their club itself.

        • mark says:

If its not Celtic’s problem why are they banning people from Celtic park mate HH

        • KevinBarry says:

A couple of previous statements Mark

          http://www.celticfc.net/newsstory.php?item=3704

I’m certain PL is on the side of the fans but he can’t rush out with statement incase he makes himself look daft – like chico green.

        • Sweeney Hughes says:

I’m sure people have been barred from CPfor a vast variety of reasons Mark, just the same as I’m sure many have been justly treated, some justly treated though think they were not and some how were infact treated unjustly.

Some may have been treated unjustly because of a fascist racist copper inside CP, or 30 miles away going home from the game or five miles away going to the game. By some computer error in the ticket office or by some arse in a hi-vis vest on four quid an hour who hasn’t had his Nat King for months..

I’m also sure that PL isn’t to blame for everything wrong in the world, though some people seem to think so, from Champion supporters to supporters with necrophiliac tendencies.
League reconstruction, no matter what view is taken, any faults will be Peters.

          Ticket pricing? Peter.
          Transfer buget? Peter.
Attendances across the game in Scotland? Peter.
          Away strip design? Peter.

Lennons team selection………the price of pies………there really is no end, the huns would have us believe big Peter was behind flooding in middle England and swine flu in Mexico!

It’s all done for a reason, the Scottish laptop presstitutes in the msm have been doing it for years and. I’m truly saddened that SOME of the Celtic support are still falling for it.

I think Celtic will have something to say in due course, no matter who actually announce it, but to hold Celtic FC and more so Peter Lawwell responsible for the actions of British police officers on the streets of Glasgow miles away from Celtic Park is quite frankly absurd and can only damage one thing ……………CELTIC FC.
But hey, maybe that’s the point!!!!

  • Daviebhoy says:

Imagine the atmosphere at CP without the GB cause that is the ultimate goal for the authorities here

BAD things can only flourish when GOOD people say or do nothing, lets get behind the GB and fight the GOOD fight

look the green brigade are not animals there was kids marching with there familys and they were attacked by the police i watched it on the internet its a disgrace yes everybody just met up and it was an unlisened walk but no cause to surround supporters like sardines batons as well and if people were not filming it there would have been a lot more police bashing fans ann

  • maddogg1967 says:

if celtic dont make a statement about this before our next home game, lets all walk out at half time in support of the GB.we need to let the board know how we feel about the treatment the GB are getting from police.

  • mark says:

@kevinbarry a never said the club haven’t made statements but none in my eyes support the fans there in denial that its a problem in those statements mate. They have put another one out tonight It’s a bit weak but at least there looking for answers from the police about Saturday so hopefully they will take the fans concerns a bit more seriously now. HH

    • KevinBarry says:

my apologies mate, just read ur other comment again. Thought u said they hadn’t released a statement…

I wonder if theres a way that police didn’t have to be used for football games – like more stewards with better training?

I know they let them c***s self police their orange walks. Really when you think about it theres no need for them to be there. I mean, london rd station is a 1 min drive away!

  • Chaz says:

come on Celtic fans lets get this up and running a massive protest march before the hibs game . All Celtic fans against the bill

  • Chaz says:

young 14 year old Celtic supporter getting a banning order from Celtic park from the police who was a mile and a half from Celtic park. The Huns wrecked Manchester and uefa said that it was nothing to do with the game

    • mark says:

How many banning orders where issued after Manchester ? pity the GB where not watching at tv that broke before the march eh … HH

  • mark says:

Would be interesting to know how many arrests and banning orders issued to Celtic supporters have actually resulted in a conviction in court ? HH

  • Monti says:

the police are going to cause a riot,it’s only a matter of time. …..

  • vino says:
