What Charlie Mulgrew really said

Charlie Mulgrew news

Charlie Mulgrew wouldn’t like Rangers back in the SPL, he wouldn’t welcome them or take them in the top division.

At a media conference to promote this year’s vote for the SPFA Player of the Year award it seemed that no one could speculate on Celtic’s prospects of winning the domestic double or the calibre of player likely to be attracted to the club during the summer.

On the back of a highly successful 12 match Champions League campaign littered with highlights attention turned to the obsession with a loss making Third Division football club.

While Ross County and Inverness Caley Thistle provide an affordable blueprint on how the Scottish game can develop it seems that some people can’t survive the death of the Glasgow derby.

It’s ten months since Gary Hooper hammered in the final goal in a titanic fixture dating back 124 years but it seems that some people just can’t move on.

Charlie Mulgrew scoresAsked about the pie-in-the-sky prospect of Sevco being catapulted past 20 clubs that live within their means into the SPL Mulgrew answered: “If it was my choice? Probably, aye.

“I don’t want to get involved in what is going on that side of things, I am just concentrating on things at Celtic and hopefully things will work out for the best.”

Later on twitter he added: “In my opinion the league is more exciting with old firm games any player in Scotland would agree. I didn’t say they should be let back in.”

And that was that. Of course the Celtic players miss the edge and drama that derby games brought to the fixture list, often defining the nature of the season for both clubs.

However David Murray’s last act as chairman of Rangers can’t be reversed, his decision to sell the club to Craig Whyte for £1 will never be forgotten.

Rather than live within their means like their competitors in the SPL Whyte went on a spending spree renewing contracts for Allan McGregor, Steve Davis, Steven Whittaker and others.

When Ally McCoist was unable to secure European football beyond August financial reality kicked in with Whyte’s decision to reject a £10m offer for Nikica Jelavic one of many wrong calls by the former billionaire from Motherwell.

And regardless of how the questions and answers are put there’s as much chance of Gretna or Clydebank featuring in next season’s top division as the return of a fixture that some people can’t accept is consigned to the history books.

Joe….they are DEAD – gone finished, no coming back.

The tribute act that are now in the 3rd division would offer no more threat than Dundee / Hearts do currently. For me they were simply another 3 points, no more no less.

For some they were THE big game but I can remember when Aberdeen / Dundee Utd / Motherwell / Hearts / HIbs were our BIG games of the season and the dead club were mere fixture fillers as they would be today.

Any short term joy some fans would get from giving them another thrashing would simply fade quickly when they saw how impotent they really are. I don’t expect Chico’s reign to last another 12 months, any new owner will need to find mega bucks quickly – new players costs and they will want top money. Who would stump up £50-100m to a loss making outfit with no European campaign in sight.

I was told today no matter what division they are in season tickets will rise to £ 380…Not even the easily deluded will rush to buy them.

  • gerrym says:

why do celtic allow players to answer questions about sevco, especially when they know the media twist everything they might say,man utd anyone?

  • Oz Celt says:

They can’t get “back” in the SPL. The’ve never been in it !

    • neil says:

      nice one mate

    • Willow says:

This “back” myth is similar to the other media favourite, that Rangers was “relegated/demoted”. Naw! The club ceased to exist as a football club as soon as it was put into liquidation, same as Airdrieonians and Gretna. To quote Sevco’s media director, “They’ll slip into liquidation within the next couple of weeks with a new company emerging but 140 years of history, triumph and tears, will have ended. No matter how Charles Green attempts to dress it up, a newco equals a new club. When the CVA was thrown out Rangers as we know them died. for once he was right.

I’d bet that when George Orwell came up with his “double-think” idea he never really thought anyone would be stupid enough to fall for it but …

  • NoPretender! says:

i watched the interview & seen with my own eyes what charlie mulgrew said.

“if it was my choice, yes, i would have them back but, i don’t wanna get into that”.

its crystal clear what he said. nothing needed twisting from the media.

this piece is as bad as any sh!te the scottish media turn out. complete irrelevance.

JUST AN EXCUSE FOR THE SHOCKING DISPLAYS THIS SEASON. to anybody that feels they need a strong rangers “fk off & play for the tribute act as the former is dead & buried. GET DA FK OVER IT!

    Hail Hail

  • madogg1967 says:

it seems celtic players are the only ones getting asked these sort of questions about sevco, they should walk out the press room the next time they get asked about sevco.HAIL HAIL

  • paul McCann says:

why ask sevco when annan and stirling and queenspark are never invited

  • Monti says:

They are GONE & WE WILL KEEP REMINDING THEM…..

    • martin kennea says:

We should ALWAYS remind them . No drawing a line in the sand , or lets move on. they are finished , dead , over , gone . Hail Hail.

  • vino says:

They should of been stripped of 5 titles (cheats)

  • Gerry says:

Q: At what point has a Sevconian player or official been asked if they miss the SPL or European nights or Celtic games
A: At no time. None. Not ever. And no plans to either!

Celtic plc should have stock answer for players to repeat. ‘We are only interested in matters Celtic’ ‘we have no interest whatever in dead clubs cheats and tax evaders nor their fans racist sectarian singing, the country, the league and humanity in general is better off without them’
Ok I added that last bit, its what is say if asked!

  • thaiscot says:

RFC are currently in liquidation, there is also an ongoing tax case so it would be inappropriate for me to comment.

that should have been his answer

  • john says:

green said it is the worst team in their history, correct.every year they move up they will clean out the previous team and probably sign a new team ,why would any player enjoy playing in that set up,they are joke.hail hail

  • brian mclaughlin says:

How long does liquidation take ?
This must be the longest one in history.
So how can Newco be Oldco ‘

  • paul says:

Who’s the old firm? Can hardly have a rivaly with sevco when weve never played them in a friendly nevermind a competitive game. I just dont get this logic beig bandied about. And if ad when they reach spl , ad we play , it shouldnt b treated as a derby no matter what spin the zombies or sky tv put on it. The addentances should be that of ross co at cp

  • Martin Lawlor says:

Have them back they have never been in it ffs mulgrew kop yourself on

  • Quack says:

What did he say wrong. I wanna see them back, its our derby and only challegers for the league until this year. Why wouldn’t you want the competition. If there was one thing the SPL had it was the old firm. I don’t get yall.

    • yogI says:

Well I dont want to see them back.I dont want to see the return of the poison society they bring with them.I dont want too have too tolerate the Anti-catholic rats they spawn.I dont want to read of people being Murdered because of the colour of their supporters scarf.I dont want to relocate my relations visiting days because they are playing at home, and constantly asking Glasgow Police to do exactly that and protect our property and surrounding areas from inhuman people.I think Mulgrew should live in the real world before he Advocates a return of Rangers F.C.

      • Quack says:

So you’d be happy if you didn’t see another old firm?

        • yogI says:

Yes, We have nothing too prove to those people and we should be aiming higher and forget about winning app.4 games a season and thinking all is well the world.I despise the term old firm and any avenue that removes us from them in any shape or form must be pursued by the club.We are pretty much set to pull in c.l.money for the next 5 years minumum,so dont be paying any attention to the media which we all know is polluted with distraught rangers supporters. If their club was in our position I can gaurantee the attitude would be this is great for scottish football etc.etc.I pray that I never set eyes on that mob ever again and that includes ever seeing them at Celtic Park.

      • sands1888 says:

We dont agree often my good man but ur bang on, they held us back, the old firm tag was despised by most of us, they hung on our coat tails since year dot. This new mob are nothing to do with us, they are just empty nothingness to the mighty glasgow celtic

  • Quack says:

Its great what we done in the Champions League and the media agrees, there has been nothing but praise. But missing out on one of the greatest games in world football, I hate it. I can’t wait to play them again. We aren”t pretty much set for Champions League in the next five years. We have to play what 3 qualifiers this year? You don’t get the money until you qualify for the competition, and with the rest of the scottish teams doing sweet fa in Europe we are completely burdened by the rest of them.

  • yogI says:

What we acheived in the recent C.L.was universally acclaimed and even the Masonic Scottish Press wouldnt be so stupid too fly in the face of world opinion. We are pretty much set for C.L. football for the next Five years I am confident of that butto appease a nit picker such as yourself the safety net of the Europa League is still a revenue raiser better than any game against Rangers.Your argument for the introduction of Rangers is based on a shortsighted fix for Adrenalin rush in beating an organisation we must distance ourselves from.

    • mark says:

Ffs zombies are out in force this week, even writing there name is a no no the huns are dead quack only the zombies/sevco live on. Why would playing a brand new club give you the same rush as playing barca juve ? I get the rush watching Celtic couldn’t care less who we play HH we won the 1st and last that’s all that matters

  • Andy says:

Mulgrew should not be commenting on Div 3 teams

  • vino says:

Leave the zombies in zombies land. The mighty CELTIC are champions again.HAIL HAIL.

  • Kendo88 says:

Charlie and none of of our players should answer questions on that dead illegal corrupt organisation! They are irrelevant to us we should NEVER ever! Play against the new incarnation either. Love Charlie bhoy so no more of that tosh talk pal and cut out the OF term as well. HH
