Wanyama’s agent plays public poker

Celtic 2 1 BarcelonaVictor Wanyama’s future is in the hands of agent Ivan Modia with negotiations conducted in conjunction with Sky Sports.

Over the last fortnight there have been a flood of stories linking the Kenyan with a move away from Celtic after two seasons in Glasgow.

A transfer fee in the region of £12m will certainly ease the pain of his departure as Celtic’s transfer market strategy is perfectly highlighted.

The benefit for the player is less obvious with a nagging doubt over whether a move to a Premiership fixture filler like Southampton will benefit his medium term career hopes.

Wherever Wanyama goes his agents won’t lose out with the prospect of another season, or even six months, at Celtic ruled out as they move to cash in on their high profile client.

“We are not in talks with Southampton and have not been since their final offer of terms, which was more than two weeks ago,” his agent Ivan Modia told Sky Sports.

“The news of the fee being agreed may just be coming out now but we see little sense in a fee being agreed if there is no reasonable prospect of the player’s terms being met.

“To suggest we are talking with Southampton is totally false, their offer was way below Victor’s expectations. There is no chance of him signing the deal on offer and, in fact, both Celtic and Southampton were informed of this some time ago.

“The player will not be forced into a corner to accept the Southampton deal, just because it is good for Celtic. Remember, he has been with the club for two years now – without a pay rise – and has given them wonderful service ever since he arrived.

“Added to this is the fact that by Celtic refusing him permission to join Queens Park Rangers last summer, Victor lost more than £1m in potential salary earnings – yet he just kept his mouth shut and continued to be a model professional. Many other players may not have adopted this attitude, in the circumstances.”

Modia added: “We know there is interest from elsewhere and Victor is obviously open to those prospects – he is currently back in Kenya and hopes that Celtic will adopt a more reasonable approach and take into account the service that he has given the club so far and the rest of these issues.

“Nobody at Celtic can question his attitude and he is hopeful he can leave on good terms with the club. He loves the club and its fans, he’s played his heart out for the jersey….but he didn’t quite expect that it may end like this.”

While the calls the shots at the moment any deal agreed also needs Celtic to be satisfied with the transfer fee on offer.

If Modia thinks that Celtic can be pushed to ‘adopt a more reasonable approach’ no doubt to up his commission, he may find an unhappy client on his hands as his public negotiating backfires.

  • Belfast Mac says:

Its all about the money money money.
Close the door on the way out Vic!

  • Brendan says:

That’s not his main agent anyway. I don’t know who this Modia guy is. Rob Moore is Victor’s agent.

  • Stuart gillies says:

Would he be happy at qpr had he went?
championship football I think not ! What is wrong with these so called model professionals ? Didn’t ask for a pay rise ! Do they knock on the managers door and ask for less when they play bad ! He may not get the move he is looking for just like Gary hooper , I do not see a top team in the epl stepping in for either , they are like children , they are not guaranteed a game at a top epl club and will not get champions league games unless it is a top epl club !

Yes chase the money , just do not kiss the club badge the next time you score a goal for my beloved team who I have supported all my life who I would play for the minimum without batting an eyelid , also this rubbish about chasing an England call up , utter rubbish , if you are good enough you will get that , Forster is not good enough and sometimes looks to have the same sort of agility as a plank of wood , a low drive near him beats him 9 times out of 10 , Gary is a great in the box striker but lacks consistency for his call up , sometimes this season he did not turn up at all , others he was superb , imagine leaving gcfc to go to hull or reading !

These players who we give a chance and platform , plucked from Beershot & Scunthorpe all of a sudden playing Barcelona in the champions league are thinking maybe I am worth more ! Sure go and disappear ! Wanyamas advisor has done his client no favours here anyway , I want him sold but for a price that is good for the club so we can buy more players like joe Ledley who conducts himself like a true professional and who loves the club , let’s get rid of these bad apples Bhoys !

  • Frank McGaaaaarvey says:

Ignore the bluster from this phud. Vic is not quoted by him whatsoever and will leave on his own terms and in his own time whilst generating the dollar signs in Peter and Dermot’s eyes!

    Everyone’s a winner baby.

  • O'Cahan says:

Where did Mr Modia crawl out from !!! Once again we have so called agents looking for their pound of flesh, so to speak. Modia says Wanyana’s attitude is not in question and I would totally agree with that. The main actor here seems to be Modia, not the player, it’s Ivan Modia’s attitude which seems to be in question….. attention seeking, unscrupulous, self-centred, it’s that time of the year for them.
    HH Keep the Faith

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

Let’s not turn on big Victor because of a mealy mouthed agent.

I agree entirely with the excellent comments of Stuart Gillies.

  • Stuart gillies says:

If I had an agent or advisor who was shouting his mouth off in this fashion I would be changing him very swiftly , you would hope to conduct and keep your business behind closed doors , smoke & fire here I reckon , I am very sure victor is hanging out for the team he supported as a kid allegedly , arsenal !

  • OZ CELT aka Davie Bhoy says:

Think its too early for Vic to move, he has got loads of potential but loads to improve on,positional sense at times and passing are way short of the level expected of a top player IMO

He has continued to improve and thrive at CP, I think he would be making a mistake in seeking a move at this stage in his career/development,just get the feeling there is an entourage of hangers-on around him that will be advising him to move with a view to lining their on pockets through commissions

Hope the big man can see through the BS and do whats best for him rather than whats in his agents interest

  • Stevie says:

Victors’s in for a shock if he thinks Southamton or Cardiff will progress his career his bank balance certainly.
Aslong as Celtic get proper compensation I wish him all the best but hope he joins a club that isn’t going to be fighting relegation.

  • Mark says:

For the African football player it’s all the dosh they don’t care who they play for as long as its the best deal and who can blame them it’s a short career that’s why Eto is in Russia on about 300 grand a week am sure that’s not his choice of places to be HH

    • Frank McGaaaaarvey says:

      Mark,

Don’t think it’s just ‘African’ footballers who are of this mindset. What a strange generalisation to make.

    • Sweeney Hughes says:

To be fair Mark, Eto’o’s 32.

      HH

  • Busterhoop says:

don’t care when or where he goes, so long as there is a pile of cash for him.

  • bhoys 'r us says:

Other reports saying that Southampton lost interest (without even speaking to Vic), because his agent was looking for £1m to broker the deal. Vic has a contract with Celtic and unless any club meets Celtic’s evaluation of him, he’s going nowhere!
His agent needs a right good kick up the erchie!

  • Andybhoy says:

What is this Modia clown banging on about? How are Celtic being unreasonable here, it wasn’t as if Wanyama had agreed terms and Celtic were holding out for a bigger transfer fee.

Celtic have a valuation, the valuation was met. It was big Vic who couldn’t agree terms, or more likely Modia wasn’t getting a big enough slice for himself, either way it’s not Celtic’s fault. If this greedy parasite of an agent thinks that running his mouth off to the media will force Celtic to lower their asking price then he’s in for a shock, if anything his outburst will mean it is less likely the club will budge even slightly on their valuation now.

It’s funny how these agents accuse others of being unreasonable then demand ridiculous amounts of cash for themselves. Feckin parasites!

  • The Silver Fhox says:

Totally agree with you Andybhoy. This Modia clown does not have Wanyama’s interests at heart – only his own pockets. Celtic will let him go, but only for the right price. In my opinion, he should stay longer and progress, but if he goes, he goes. However, nobody should get him on the cheap. Agents don’t develop players, they just suck everyone dry.

  • The Silver Fhox says:

It turns out that it is not big Vic’s terms that Southampton didn’t agree to but Clown Modia’s terms – he wanted £1million for himself – greedy B. Celtic took Wanyama from nowhere and developed him, giving him a platform. Victor’s loyalty is to Celtic, not the parasite who calls himself an agent.
