Terry Butcher ice cream newsEuan Norris and assistant referee Stuart Stevenson were in the firing line last night after disallowing a perfectly good goal by Inverness Caley Thistle in the 2-1 home defeat from Partick Thistle.

Just before half-time Ross Draper and Aaron Doran took a carefully rehearsed corner-kick that was way too smart for Stevenson who looked on helplessly.

The move almost petered out but the ball fell to Draper who smashed a low shot past Scott Fox into the net.

Stevenson was immediately faced by one Thistle player protesting about the corner and raised his flag before speaking to Norris who disallowed the goal.

Draper was adamant that he had played within the rules with Stevenson and Norris cobbling together a story that the ball had been touched twice- although Stevenson for reasons best known to himself kept his flag by his side until confronted by the Thistle player.

“Ross (Draper) said he trapped the ball and put it down and the linesman said he could carry on,” Butcher said.

“Then he had two touches and put the ball in the box and there was an eternity between the corner being taken and Aaron scoring.

“If Ross had touched the ball twice, it’s an infringement. But if the linesman tells a player to continue, it should be a goal.

“I had a word with Euan Norris at half-time and he could only go by what his assistant said and had to give a free-kick which I understand.”

The laws of the game state that the ball must travel it’s circumference, which it did, to be in play, there is no need for the ball to leave the corner arc.

With two officials unable to apply the laws of the game and an assistant referee who only flags after being confronted by an opposing player the SFA will have some explaining to do today- three years after the infamous Dougiegate incident at Tannadice when Dougie McDonald lied to Neil Lennon about cancelling out a penalty he initially awarded to Celtic in a game with Dundee United.

what a weekend for incompetent linesmen hibs offside goal allowed to stand inverness goal wrongly disallowed i wonder if these linesmen will be brought before the powers at hampden

  • Thomas Haverstock says:

Terry now you know how we fell being told by some man in black that the player was offside or the ball did not cross the line Not every game But more than you have every been With your CV and back ground Hail Hail. JMJ

  • The silver fhox says:

The ball was clearly tapped and then moved forward with the toe of his boot so it was touched more than once. i have to side with the officials on this one.
Also it did not travel a full circumference before the second player touched it.
In fact, my first impression was that he was placing the ball to have the corner taken and the second player actually took the corner to himself.
A few things to consider here, but I believe that the officials were entirely correct in not awarding this goal. So it is a bit rich talking about officials losing the plot here. It was the Inverness players who lost the plot.

I’ve got to say I agree silver.
I read Joes article on my Android, without vid, this morning and found bugners explanation quite convoluted and found it difficult to know what had happened. After seeing the vid I don’t know what he’s complaining about.
    What’s this, a covert corner?
It’s like something out of an U10s match.
Basically he’s just walked over rolled the ball with his foot and said ‘right I just kicked that, this mug behind me husnae seen it (the Thistle defender) so when he runs wae me into the box you just pile in on yer todd, easy peasy japanesey’.

    You must be fkn joking!

It’s patently obvious the Thistle player had no idea the ball had been played in, is the sleekitness in Scottish football working It’s way up the leagues or is bugner taking tips from slabbery sally?

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

Ps. The hibs ‘goal’ was at least two foot offside and was bang on the line of the grass cutting which made it stand out a fkn mile.

  • The Villain says:

If the linesman lets the corner go-ahead as taken then the goal doesn’t happen because the thistle player sees the touch and runs in to make a tackle. The linesman waves him away because he rules the corner hasn’t been taken yet. The only thing I don’t understand why he didn’t flag right away.

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

Next week-end the cunning plan is to do a huddle at a free kick while one of them cunningly sticks the ball up his jumper………………
