The Scottish Sun has issued an apology after using a five year old picture of Celtic supporters to balance out their coverage of Monday’s Glasgow Cup Final.
One smoke bomb was let off in the Celtic section of the stand midway through the first half followed by several smoke bombs, fireworks and bangers from the Sevco fans.
While a number of pictures of those fans behind a banner ‘UB07’, representing one of the many supporters groups at Ibrox, were available similar pictures were in short supply involving Celtic supporters.
Someone at The Sun appears to have turned to twitter in search of a similar Celtic picture and appeared to come up with the goods… unfortunately the picture used was almost five years old.
Celtic fans flooded social media to register their complaints forcing The Sun to alter their online edition with an apology appearing in today’s printed edition.
The apology read: “In an article ‘Fans’ Flare-Up’ in yesterday’s Scottish Sun, about fans letting off firecrackers and smoke bombs during the under-17s match at Celtic Park, we inadvertently used a photograph of a man in a balaclava holding a flare that was taken in November 2009 in similar circumstances.
“This was used alongside pictures of the crowd being herded by police at the game, taken on Monday night. We apologise unreservedly for the mistake.”
The main source of the trouble was behind the press area at Celtic Park with the police appearing after 30 minutes to contain the trouble and back up the stewarding.
Rather than deal with the 50-80 trouble makers the police adopted a containment approach with some video footage taken of the fans involved with the fireworks.
On the pitch Celtic won the match 1-0 thanks to a second half goal from Aidan Nesbitt.
