Ronny DeilaCeltic are set to head to Gran Canaria in January with matches against  PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk lined up.

The SPFL match against St Johnstone on January 10 has already been postponed with the finishing touches being made for the training trip to the Canary island.

“We’re talking about it,” Ronny Deila confirmed. “There can be good opponents for us down there and the environment, too, is good. Shakhtar Donetsk and PSV Eindhoven could be good opponents and that is important.”

PSV Eindhoven could be potential Europa League opponents for Celtic while Shakhtar will be involved in the last 16 of the Champions League in the new year with second place in Group H assured ahead of Athletic Bilbao and Bate.

Last season Celtic enjoyed a similar trip to Turkey where they played two matches against Trabzonspor and Galatasaray before returning to clinch three-in-a-row.

Following their return from Gran Canaria Celtic face Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park on January 17 before hosting Motherwell four days later.

Qualifying for the last 32 of the Europa League will provide Deila with his biggest challenge in the new year with the Norwegian looking forward to further European action.

“We want to stay as long as possible in this tournament and we’re not here to play show-off games,” he added. “We are going to do everything we have to do to go through and we want a team that suits us best so that we can go further.

“We have to take what is coming and there are a lot of good teams who we could meet. It is going to be hard whoever we meet, we are going to be up for it, anyway, and I am really looking forward to those games.”
