Champions LeagueCeltic are likely to face another long trek into Eastern Europe to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

Ronny Deila’s side were comfortable in a 0-0 draw with Qarabag to go through on a 1-0 aggregate into the play-off round for the greatest competition in club football.

Celtic will be seeded in Friday’s draw, which takes place at 11am Celtic Park time, and will be drawn out against Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel), Astana (Kazakhstan), Skenderbeu (Albania), Partizan Belgrade (Serbia) or Malmo (Sweden).

Malmo, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Partizan Belgrade all knocked out teams rated higher then themselves in the UEFA rankings which removed Bate Borisov, Dinamo Zagreb and APOEL Nicosia from the group of potential opponents.

Despite losing the first leg 2-0 in Salzburg, Malmo, including Jo Inge Berget, bounced back to win 3-0 at home with all of the goals coming in the first half.

Partizan Belgrade drew the first leg of their tie 1-1 away to Steaua Bucharest but were comfortable winners winning 4-2 at home while Maccabi Tel Aviv scored two late goals away to Viktoria Plzen to go through on a 3-2 aggregate.

“We’ll take what’s coming and I don’t think that team will be better than the team we met today,” Deila said after seeing off Qarabag.

“It was a long game. I’m so proud of the team. They worked really, really hard and showed good discipline.

“It was a very good team effort. We defended very well. Offensively, we should’ve punished them more than we did.

“We have to understand that we met a very good team. Last year they beat Dnipro, who went to the final of the Europa League. They had good results against Inter Milan as well. So, this was a good, good performance.”

Celtic have three domestic matches before they tackle the play-off round with Deila looking for his side to improve on the performances against Qarabag.

He added: β€œIn the future we hope our team to be more on the ball and cause them more problems but now we are not there yet and we need to defend well. We did that properly and we deserved, in the end, to get through.

“The players get better every day. We’re going to use the three matches before we go out to go out again to fight for the last one, we’re going to use everyday now to get ready for the games and get even better than we are now.”
