Ajax dropped their first domestic points of the season with a 2-2 draw away to lowly Twente on Saturday.
Despite the setback Frank de Boer’s side remain in top spot as they look forward to facing Celtic in Europa League action on Thursday.
After finding themselves trailing by two goals early in the second half Viktor Fisher threw Ajax a lifeline before Serbian midfielder Nermanja Gudelj equalised with a penalty in the 82nd minute.
While Ronny Deila doesn’t have far to look for his problems de Boer is far from happy with his own side who were knocked out of the Champions League at the third qualifying round by Rapid Vienna.
After Saturday’s draw the former Barcelona defender said: “It was only after the first half that we stepped on to the field. We started very weak, there was no sharpness. For so long we did not do the things we want to see. The first goal we went to sleep at a corner.
“It is important that we start cutting it at the beginning of matches. Because we started poorly, we got into trouble. You can eventually be glad that you come back, but I am not happy at this result. It really was not necessary.”
When Celtic are in action in the Amsterdam ArenA Fenerbahce will host Molde in the other tie in Group A.
Fenerbahce are at the top of the Turkish league with ten points from four matches thanks to a late late show against Antalyaspor.
With the scores tied at 1-1 the referee allowed seven minutes of stoppage time with former Manchester United winger Nani scoring his second goal of the game to give Victor Pereira’s side full points.
In Norway Molde won 4-2 away to Sandefjord but are sitting in seventh place in the Norwegian league- nine points adrift of a European place with seven matches left to play.
