Worse than McCoist? Warburton’s men crash out the League Cup to St Johnstone

Warburton MarkSevco’s dreams of the quadruple died a death tonight as St Johnstone handed out some home truths to the runaway Championship leaders.

A 3-1 scoreline barely reflected the gulf in class between the teams as Mark Warburton’s All Stars were outclassed in every area of the park by a team that has lost all four away matches in the Premiership.

Twelve months ago, under the management of Ally McCoist, Sevco defeated St Johnstone 1-0 in the League Cup but despite their 100% Championship record there was little prospect of a repeat of that result.

Looking ahead to the match, Warbo, who used to work from 6am to 11pm as a city trader, said: “I don’t think the gap between the Championship and the Premier League is quite as big as it is down south. I think it’ll be a good challenge and we’re very much looking forward to that fixture.

“We have to go into every competition with the aim of winning that competition. We’re in good form right now, we’re in good shape, we’re physically strong, we’re scoring goals, we’re keeping clean sheets, so we expect to go into any game and offer a very firm challenge.”

Much was expected of former Wigan aces Martyn Waghorn, Rob Kiernan and James Tavernier with club captain Lee Wallace claiming before the match that he was confident of winning his first senior medal.

Backed by over 20,000 fans the home side held out for 19 minutes before Murray Davidson opened the scoring from close range after Michael O’Halloran left Waldo chasing shadows.

St Johnstone should have doubled their lead three minutes later but Steven McLean skied his shot over the bar after another probing run by O’Halloran.

The small pocket of St Johnstone fans didn’t have long to wait to celebrate a second goal with Simon Lappin drilling in a 20 yarder after finding himself unmarked from a David Wotherspoon corner.

Any hopes of a second half revival were over within a minute of the restart when O’Halloran easily raced away from the iron curtain defence before steering his shot beyond Wes Foderingham.

Tavernier scored a consolation for Warbo’s men in the 62nd minute but the Premiership side held on to their lead to book a place in the last eight of the League Cup.

Reality Check for Sevco and their Deluded fans, well done St.Johnstone.

  • Darby says:

This article is very dispresectful to The Rangers. They’ve got bigger fish to try than the diddy League Cup. Like The Petrofac Trophy.

    • weemarty says:

the bigger fish seems to be winning the haddies league of which they seem to be the biggest. All i’ve got to say to dicerning sevco fans is…. if they were half as good as they think they are, they’d be twice as good as they think they are

  • wulz says:

Well it’s got to be a shock to sevco the Scottish Barcelona. Never mind the press will be saying the trebles still on, and there still title favourites next year.
Maybe Dave King can get the result reversed, like the liquidation.

What will happen when they have to return the two loan players, without them tonight they would have been even pisher!

First tier v Second tier ? NO CONTEST ! HA HA
Warbmeister FAILS his first REAL test ????????

  • Hugh Burns says:

What difference when serco play against players that train every day instead of working on building site all week and probably on a Saturday morning before going too play against Serco. Not a plasterer , brickie, or labourer in sight and what happens? Crash.! And never in my life have I heard such a bias commentary coming from those behind the mic`s. They were nearly crying willing serco to score. The bubble has burst and good enough for them. Warburton has also got that arrogant serco smirk but it will disappear soon. BBC news just on and surprise surprise serco was not mentioned first. !!

  • spa says:

problem is there aren’t the teams in the championship clever or quick enough thinkers to challenge sevco and this results in failure in the cup competitions

How’s Mr war buttons magic hat sitting tonight

  • BigB says:

Well that looks like the end of ANOTHER income stream 😀

  • Tubaluk says:

The magic hat has disappeared it must really be magic after all.

  • henkesdreadlocks says:

I think the magic hat was turned into a megaphone judging by the deadybears booing at halftime .

  • ljimbo says:

Listen my fellow realists!! As a football fan in the foremost, I asked rangers and Celtic fans to take odds @ 9 to 2 on this. There was no bigotry involved. I was purely thinking of how you can hype something, example, st. Johnstone fourth in the league and in Europe, rangers still unproven!!!!!!! I think with 55 quid in my pock we all realise now the gulf is bigger than one thinks. Said without prejudice.

    • Jim1 says:

St. Johnstone are actually 7th in the league. A wake up call for Mr. Keevins and the Daily Rangers : )

Where are the David Cunningham King millions….same old. Loyal laptop start again.

  • drawkcab says:

truth is sevco actually played quite well but the St Johnstone manager out witted the magic hat man.
Sevcos goal was a good one.
In the end your supreme leader DRAWKCAB was delighted with the final score.
We don’t have to play them in the league cup.
Hopefully we don’t have to play them ever.
Nice to see them being built up to come crashing back down.

  • Danny Paton says:

If Warbo was still a city trader he would would have been at work long enough to be drinking his 2nd cup of coffee by now

  • Andy says:

Messi and Ronaldo can sleep easy tonight the Govan Galacticos are not quite ready to take on the world.

  • Glenboig bhoy says:

Unlike the Championship play off last year Rangers and their fans don’t have to worry about a second leg.
Pulled apart by the Saints on numerous occasions………the defence is horrendous. Tavernier is great going forward, Wallace, Kiernan and Wilson were exposed on a regular basis.

With Ross County taking 7 off Falkirk, perhaps Warbs will reevaluate the gap between the leagues.

Anyway to soon for panic measures with Mr King waiting in the wings to throw millions at the squad over the next few transfer windows…………after he’s paid back that nice Mr Taylor!
