Griffiths: Mind the gap

Celtic v UMF Stjarnan - UEFA Champions League Second Qualifying Round First LegLeigh Griffiths wants to fire Celtic seven points clear of Aberdeen- just weeks after trailing the dandy Dons by five.

The striker has been in exceptional form since the turn of the year and scored the opening goal of the game at Pittodrie before Celtic crashed to a 2-1 defeat.

Aberdeen followed that win up with three points at home to Hamilton to reinforce their title credentials as the ‘crisis’ developed around Celtic.

After four back-to-back defeats and a home draw with Motherwell Aberdeen come to Celtic Park for what appears to be a make or break game for their title challenge.

A win for Derek McInnes’ side will cut the gap down to a single point but Griffiths has an entirely different outcome in mind.

We want to create as big a gap as possible and seven points is a big gap but there is still a long way to go,” the in-form striker said.

We are at home, the fans expect us to win and we are going out to try and do that. Aberdeen will be coming to try and make it two wins from two against us. They ran us close in the first game here last season.”

Griffiths goes into tomorrow’s game following a match winning performance against Hearts at Tynecastle on Wednesday night.

With the match goal-less he opened the scoring with a great solo effort before creating Celtic’s second goal for Tom Rogic with a great run and cross.

The former Hibs striker loves nothing better than scoring at Tynecastle with his most recent goal getting plenty of play time in the Griffiths household. I have watched it back again a few times, don’t worry about that,” he added. “It’s one of my personal favourites.”

That’s exactly how a felt as well. The only thing I’d disagree with him on, was when he said there jealous. Maybe some are but in this country it’s bigotry, because of Celtics Irish background.
