Carlisle’s Keith Curle shows how to tackle racists

Money in FootballKeith Curle and Carlisle United have shown others how to tackle the football racists.

Arouna Kone’s second minute goal for Everton was met by racist abuse from some Carlisle supporters during yesterday’s FA Cup tie with the Premiership side.

Before the match it was announced that Everton fans had donated £8,000 to the League Two club whose ground was pictured under several feet of water during the recent floods.

After the abuse of Kone, Curle and Everton boss Roberto Martinez agreed to put out an announcement over the public address system warning that racist behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated.

Following the match the Carlisle boss told reporters: “It is not what we want inside Brunton Park, inside football, or inside society.

“The club will make all efforts. I know there was a steward in the terraces and CCTV as well. We will do everything we can to identify who it was and make sure the relevant penalties and punishments will be adhered to.

“I didn’t hear it myself, but what I would say to any supporters who were next to people and heard people – please step forward and identify them, because it is not accepted.”

Martinex explained: “We agreed to make an announcement. I thought the referee was very good in how he dealt with that.

It was just a reaction to the celebration of the goal and that was it. It would be wrong to highlight such a moment in an enjoyable footballing festivity.”

Mark Warburton hasn’t commented on Ibrox supporters singing the catholic hating Billy Boys song during the festive win over Hibs.
