The ugly face of English football returned to London tonight as the Manchester United team bus was attacked with windows smashed on route to the final ever match at Upton Park.

Speaking to Sky Sports Wayne Rooney said: “It wasn’t nice, the coach got smashed up, but we are here now.

“I’m sure you’ll see the images. It’s not for me to say, but it was disappointing of course.

“It’s a big night for West Ham, but I’m sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done.”

Tonight’s match has been built up as a highly emotional fairwell to the stadium that has been home to West Ham for over 100 years with the club moving into the Olympic Stadium at Stratford next season.

Behind the image of ‘appy ‘ammers there has been a long time hooligan element associated with the club with all the conditions in place for things to kick off tonight.

A day in the sun, evening kick off and a hatred for Manchester United that has been most visably directed at Paul Ince and David Beckham while playing at Upton Park.

Kick off for the match has been put back 45 minutes to 8.30pm with fears that there will be more trouble during the game with passions running high off the park.

A win for Manchester United will take them above Manchester City into fourth place with the preparation for Lois van Gaal’s side badly disrupted. Last month Manchester Utd knocked West Ham out of the FA Cup at Upton Park.
