fifa-logoFIFA has denied reports in the German newspaper Die Welt that Gianni Infantino is under investigation for a breach of ethics.

Infantino replaced Sepp Blatter as president of the world game earlier this year with FIFA under attack from all angles.

The process of awarding the World Cup to Russia and Qatar has come under strong criticism with almost every aspect of FIFA being scrutinised with a number of executives awaiting criminal charges.

According to Die Welt Infantino is being quizzed over the destruction of minutes from a meeting that could lead to a 90 day suspension.

Further charges and accusations would sent FIFA’s credibility through the floor just as Euro 2016 is about to kick off in France with the spotlight on the administrators of the international game.

Responding to the claim from the German newspaper FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said: “The email exchange that makes mention of the deletion of audio files refers to a copy of the original audio file of the meeting that was improperly stored on a local drive.

“This mention does not refer to the officially archived audio file. That file exists and is properly saved at Fifa.”

By issuing a formal denial to the story FIFA are providing the claim with a level of credibility- with further accusations likely from the newspaper.

Some observers have claimed that it is impossible for FIFA to clean itself from within and that a new governing body will have to be formed breaking from from the baggage of the past.

Should further accusations emerge about Infantino it will be impossible for FIFA to retain credibility by appointing a third president within a calendar year.
