Brendan Rodgers has made an official approach to Liverpool for defender John Flanagan.

According to a report in The Scottish Sun Celtic have made a move to sign the defender on loan with the prospect of making the deal permanent.

Rodgers has been linked with a number of Liverpool defenders but according to the report an official approach has been made for Flanagan.

The 23-year-old made just eight appearances last season under Jurgen Klopp and is unlikely to be part of the German’s plans for this season.

In 2014 he was part of the England squad that prepared for the World Cup in the USA but like John Stones of Everton he missed out on the trip to Brazil.

While Stones is being linked with a £50m move from Everton to Manchester City Flanagan’s career has stalled due to injuries.

Rodgers is keen to strengthen his defence and gave Flanagan his chance at Anfield.

Whether the right-back or central defender is ready to step straight into the Celtic team remains to be seen with the hoops facing a tricky Champions League third round qualifier on July 26/27 if they get past Lincoln Red Imps in the return leg.

So far Rodgers has only brought in Moussa Dembele to his squad but after the defeat in Gibraltar the need to bring in new faces has been accelerated.

Celtic will face Zalgiris Vilnius or Astana if they get past Lincoln Red Imps with Astrna favourites to go through after drawing the first leg 0-0 in Lithuania.
