Mark Warburton has suffered the ultimate transfer insult with Dom Ball set to join Alan Stubbs on loan at Rotherham.
The Tottenham defender was one of the stars of last season’s Petrofac Cup triumph with Warbo having high hopes of convincing Spurs to send him north of the border for another loan.
Discussing another loan deal last week Warbo said: “The fact is Dom’s a very talented boy we know well. He settled in really well into the club, he loved the city, performed well for Rangers last year.
“So if that was an option for us then we would move but it is not as clear as the media might suggest.”
Yesterday it emerged that Rotherham are close to taking Ball to Yorkshire where he will team up with another Warbo target Scott Allan.
Last summer Warbo, who used to work as a city trader, was able to bring in loan signings from Arsenal and Spurs but that source appears to have gone cold.
Speaking earlier this week about his lack of signings he admitted: “You have 21-year-old players down there on up to £25k a week.
“That is fact. We went after a couple of players for loan deals and we found out were in excess of 25-30 grand a week – and there’s a clutch of eight to 10 clubs prepared to pay full wages. It’s incredible.
“Players are set up for life from an early age so how hungry are they late in their careers?
“I have seen youngsters on £40k a week. That’s £2million a year over five years. Add in sign-ons and bonuses and that’s a £12.5m contract. How many young players can maintain that desire, hunger and appetite?
“I’m amazed at the amount young players get paid these days and so many just drift away without fulfilling their potential.”
