It wasn’t a vintage performance but there was plenty for Brendan Rodgers to take from the 2-0 win over Motherwell.

Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele were on the scoresheet in the 18th and 86th minutes with Kieran Tierney and Dembele striking the woodwork.

In-between times there were long passages of possession but at times too many touches were taken in the penalty box rather than having a pop at goal.

The return from an international break is probably more problematic than a midweek European tie with Tom Rogic the classic example. How can you consider a player who has travelled from Saudi Arabia to Melbourne and arrived back at Lennoxtown on Thursday?

Nir Bitton and Mikael Lustig were other international casualties allowing Cristian Gamboa and Liam Henderson to come in from the cold and enjoy some useful game-time.

When it came to substitutions Rodgers was bold with his switches, even introducing Kolo Toure late on just to ensure full points.

For us to succeed it’s not about being hungry for success it’s about being starving,” Rodgers said afterwards in reference to the run by Dembele to earn a penalty.

A previous Irishman at Celtic talked about another club as the benchmark, under Rodgers a new benchmark is being set for every player to aspire to.
